Many of the structures and parameters that are detected, measured and reported in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) have at least some properties that are fractal, meaning complex and self-similar at different scales. To date however, there has been little use of fractal geometry in CMR; by comparison, many more applications of fractal analysis have been published in MR imaging of the brain.This review explains the fundamental principles of fractal geometry, places the fractal dimension into a meaningful context within the realms of Euclidean and topological space, and defines its role in digital image processing. It summarises the basic mathematics, highlights strengths and potential limitations of its application to biomedical imaging, shows key current examples and suggests a simple route for its successful clinical implementation by the CMR community.By simplifying some of the more abstract concepts of deterministic fractals, this review invites CMR scientists (clinicians, technologists, physicists) to experiment with fractal analysis as a means of developing the next generation of intelligent quantitative cardiac imaging tools.

A rare presentation of left atrial tumor as acute stroke.

This case report deals with a case of stroke in young female patient who was later diagnosed to have left atrial tumor. This female patient in her late 20s presented with a history of 1 month of progressive postural giddiness (in upright position), which was followed by sudden onset right monoparesis. The patient arrived to the hospital with above mentioned complaints.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factors in the general population, being associated with high morbidity and socioeconomic burden. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a non-negligible complication of DM, whose pathophysiological fundaments are the altered cardiac metabolism, the hyperglycemia-triggered formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and the inflammatory milieu which are typical in diabetic patients. These metabolic abnormalities lead to cardiomyocytes apoptosis, interstitial fibrosis and mechanical cardiac dysfunction, which can be identified with non-invasive imaging techniques, like echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance.

Routine screening for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) through point-of-care assays for at-home or community-based testing of salivary biomarkers can significantly improve patient outcomes. However, its translatability has been hindered by a dearth of biosensing devices that streamline assay procedures for rapid biomarker quantitation. To address this challenge through end-to-end engineering, we developed an in-house, all-in-one microfluidic immunosensing device that integrates on-chip vibration-enhanced incubation, magnetic-assisted separation using immune magnetic bead probes, and colorimetric readout via absorbance measurements.
