A series of pentacyclic triterpenoids derivatives bearing O-[4-(1-piperazinyl)-4-oxo-butyryl moiety has been synthesized and investigated for their potential antiproliferative activities. Pentacyclic triterpenoids derivative compounds were synthesized by a four or six step synthetic procedure. The activity studies were evaluated using Cell Counting Kit-8 method, and Western blotting analysis on A549 cells, MCF-7 cells and Hela cells. Compounds methyl 3-O-[4-(1-piperazinyl)-4-oxo-butyryl]olean-12-ene-28-oate (OA-4) and compound 2-O-[4-(1-piperazinyl)-4-oxo-butyryl]-3,23-dihydroxyurs-12-ene-28-oate (AA-5) were found to be promising antiproliferative agents. These compounds show potentiality for further optimization as antitumor drugs.

Enhanced bone cement for fixation of prosthetic joint utilizing nanoparticles.

J Mater Sci Mater Med

January 2025

Biomedical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt.

Bone cement is commonly utilized to secure prosthetic joints in the body because of its robust fixation, stability, biocompatibility, and immediate load-bearing capability. However, issues such as loosening, leakage, and insufficient bioactivity can lead to its failure. Therefore, improving its mechanical, physical, and biological properties is crucial for enhancing its efficiency.

The factors controlling the catalytic activity in photochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are studied in detail for two macrocyclic cobalt compounds bearing two N-heterocyclic carbenes and two pyridyl donors ( and , where has a methoxy substituent on each pyridyl ligand). The present study adopts an aqueous photosystem consisting of EDTA, [Ru(bpy)] (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), and MV (MV = methylviologen) at pH = 5. Both catalysts are shown to promote HER in a similar efficiency (TON = 12-13 in 6 h), revealing a minor contribution of the electron-donating methoxy substituents.

Dried Apricot Polyphenols Suppress the Growth of A549 Human Lung Adenocarcinoma Cells by Inducing Apoptosis via a Mitochondrial-Dependent Pathway.

Dried apricots are rich in a variety of polyphenols, which have anti-cancer activity. In this study, 949 phenolic substances were found by means of UPLC-MS/MS, mainly including 2',7-dihydroxy-3',4'-dimethoxyisoflavan, scopoletin, rutin, quercetin-3-O-robinobioside, and elaidolinolenic acid. The results indicated that dried apricot polyphenols (DAPs) could cause cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 and G2/M phases by decreasing the cyclin D1, CDK4, cyclin B1, CDK1, and CDK6 levels in A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cells.

This study explores the potential of using underutilized materials from agricultural and forestry systems, such as rice husk, wheat straw, and wood strands, in developing corrugated core sandwich panels as a structural building material. By leveraging the unique properties of these biobased materials within a corrugated geometry, the research presents a novel approach to enhancing the structural performance of such underutilized biobased materials. These biobased materials were used in different lengths to consider the manufacturing feasibility of corrugated panels and the effect of fiber length on their structural performance.

Some biomasses like cotton contain natural fibrous structures. This is a desirable structural feature for exposure of adsorption sites on cotton-derived activated carbon (AC). This was verified herein by conducting activation of cotton with ZnCl, HPO, KCO or KOH, probing whether structural transformation during activation could be confined inside a cotton fiber.
