Spiny follicular hyperkeratosis (SFH) is follicular flesh-colored hyperkeratotic spicules that are linked to different situations including drug reactions. Previously suspected drugs are BRAF inhibitors and cyclosporine. We described a 51-year-old psoriasis patient with SFH who had been using acitretin.

Spiny Keratoderma in Association with Melanoma.

Dermatopathology (Basel)

Department of Dermatology, University of California San Francisco, San Francisco, CA 94115, USA.

Spiny keratoderma (SK) was first described by Brown in 1871 and is characterized by numerous 1-2 mm spines of keratin on the palms and soles, usually sparing the dorsal surfaces, or disseminated over the trunk. Histologically, the "spine" represents a column of hyperkeratosis. Several different forms are known, including familial, sporadic, post-inflammatory and paraneoplastic.

Background: Human demodex mites are parasites that live in the pilosebaceous unit and can result in the disease demodicosis. While demodicosis may occur as a primary skin disease; immunosuppression, and topical or systemic immunosuppressive treatments can cause secondary demodicosis. It is known that thyroid hormones may cause skin changes, such as xerosis, and thereby may also modulate immune responses in the skin.

Ichthyosis follicularis syndromes in patients with mutations in GJB2.

Clin Exp Dermatol

August 2022

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Ichthyosis follicularis (IF) manifests as generalized spiny follicular projections found in syndromic diseases secondary to SREBF1 and MBTPS2 mutations. We sought the genetic cause of IF in two distinct families from a cohort of 180 patients with ichthyosis. In Family 1, the proband (Patient 1) presented with IF, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and punctate palmoplantar keratoderma.

Good things come to those who mate: analysis of the mating behaviour in the menstruating rodent, Acomys cahirinus.

BMC Zool

February 2022

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, School of Clinical Sciences, Education Program in Reproduction & Development, Monash University, Clayton, VIC, Australia.

Background: The Egyptian spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) is the only known rodent to exhibit true, human-like menstruation and postpartum ovulation, and is an important new model for reproductive studies. Spiny mice do not produce a visible copulatory plug, and calculation of gestational age is therefore restricted by the need to use mated postpartum dams. The current inefficient method of monitoring until parturition to provide a subsequent estimate of gestational age increases study duration and costs.
