We combine scanning-tunneling-spectroscopy experiments probing magnetic impurities on a superconducting surface with a theoretical analysis of the tunneling processes between (superconducting) tip and substrate. We show that the current through impurity-induced Shiba bound states is carried by single-electron tunneling at large tip-substrate distances and Andreev reflections at smaller distances. The single-electron current requires relaxation processes, allowing us to extract information on quasiparticle transitions and lifetimes.

Pectate lyases, known for their alkaliphilic nature, are ideal for industrial applications that require specific pH conditions, particularly in industries such as textiles and pulp extraction. These enzymes, primarily from the polysaccharide lyase family 1 (PL1) of different microbial sources, play a vital role in polysaccharide degradation. Given the potent pectinolytic activity of Bacillus pectate lyases, targeting these enzymes is crucial for identifying the most effective candidates.

With its advantages of high cross-sectional utilization, shallow depth, and uninterrupted surface road traffic, the pipe-jacking method has been widely used in underground passages, metro stations, and other projects. However, this leads to a large volume of pipe-jacking waste soils that must be processed. Pipe-jacking waste soils are different from shield-tunneling waste soils.

To achieve accurate monitoring of water leakage in tunnels, a new vertical graphene sensor is designed and developed. The sensor operates on the principle that the superabsorbent polymer (SAP) swells dramatically upon water absorption. This swelling induces deformation in the vertical graphene (VG) thin film, highly sensitive to such changes.

The fully mechanized tunnelling method using an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (EPB-TBM) with a horseshoe-shaped cross section was first developed and applied to a loess mountain tunnel, along with the application of a horseshoe-shaped segmental tunnel lining. The mechanical behavior of this novel type of segmental tunnel lining still contained uncertainties, and full-scale ring tests were conducted for further investigation. During the loading process, the ring deformation, joint opening, and concrete strain were measured, and the occurrence and progression of structural damage were observed and documented.

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a prevalent cumulative strain injury associated with occupational risk factors such as vibration, repetitive and forceful wrist movements, and awkward wrist postures. This study aimed to identify Ontario workers at elevated risk for CTS and to explore sex differences in CTS risk among workers.
Methods: The Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) links accepted lost time compensation claims to health administrative databases.
