Polyoxometalates (POMs) are discrete polynuclear metal-oxo anions with a fascinating variety of structures and unique chemical and physical properties. Their application in various fields is well covered in the literature, however little information about their usage in protein crystallization is available. This review summarizes the impact of the vast class of POMs on the formation of protein crystals, a well-known (frustrating) bottleneck in macromolecular crystallography, with the associated structure elucidation and a particular emphasis focused on POM's potential as a powerful crystallization additive for future research. The Protein Data Bank (PDB) was scanned for protein structures with incorporated POMs which were assigned a PDB ligand ID resulting in 30 PDB entries. These structures have been analyzed with regard to (i) the structure of POM itself in the immediate protein environment, (ii) the kind of interaction and position of the POM within the protein structure and (iii) the beneficial effects of POM on protein crystallography apparent so far.

Liquid crystal (LC) based biosensors offer a sensitive platform for detecting biomolecules due to their ability to respond to molecular interactions through changes in LC orientations. In this paper, we introduce a novel LC biosensor using 4-heptyl-4-biphenyl carbonitrile (7CB) to detect Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA). The interaction between BSA and 7CB was investigated using polarising optical microscopy (POM), molecular docking (MD), and Raman spectroscopy.

Eutrophication has emerged as a significant environmental problem for global lakes. As an essential carrier of nutrients, particulate organic matter (POM) plays a vital role in the eutrophication process of these aquatic systems. Protein-O-mannosylation (POM) is a form of O-glycosylation that is ubiquitous and has been studied extensively throughout in fungi and animals. The key glycosyltransferase, protein O-mannosyltransferase (PMT), a member of family GT-39, is also found in over 3,800 bacterial genomes but has only been minimally examined from prokaryotes. In prokaryotes POM has only been investigated in terms of pathogenicity (in Mycobacterium tuberculosis) even though there are far more non-pathogenic bacteria that appear to carry out POM.
