On 10 April 2015, a Dutch TV crew was filming at the Royal Burgers Zoo in Arnhem, The Netherlands. It was the intention to film the chimpanzees in the enclosure from close-by and from above with the means of a drone. When the drone came a bit closer to the chimpanzees, a female individual made two sweeps with a branch that she held in one hand. The second one was successful and downed the drone. The use of the stick in this context was a unique action. It seemed deliberate given the decision to collect it and carry it to a place where the drone might be attacked. This episode adds to the indications that chimpanzees engage in forward planning of tool-use acts.

The ectoparasite Varroa destructor is a major contributor to the global decline of honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera), especially in the Northern Hemisphere. However, Varroa-resistant honeybee populations have been reported in various regions around the globe, including Europe and Africa. This resistance is primarily attributed to the trait known as Suppressed Mite Reproduction (SMR), which significantly reduces the reproductive success of Varroa mites within these colonies.

We adopt a tripart approach in describing the human-centred challenges with human-swarm interaction. First, the results of large-N laboratory studies will be discussed which found evidence of trust biases (e.g.

There are powerful tools for modelling swarms that have strong spatial structures like flocks of birds, schools of fish and formations of drones, but relatively little work on developing formalisms for other swarm structures like hub-based colonies doing foraging, maintaining a nest or selecting a new nest site. We present a method for finding low-dimensional representations of swarm state for simulated homogeneous hub-based colonies solving the best-of-N problem. The embeddings are obtained from latent representations of convolution-based graph neural network architectures and have the property that swarm states which have similar performance have very similar embeddings.

Background: To use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to deliver pesticides, new data are needed to allow regulators to conduct risk assessments. A field trial was conducted to obtain spray drift data relating to ground deposits and airborne spray resulting from a spray application delivered by a small UAV.
Results: A 12 m width area was sprayed with four passes of the UAV and spray deposits were collected within the sprayed area and up to 50 m downwind.

Flooding presents substantial dangers to human lives and infrastructure, underscoring the need to map flood-prone areas to implement effective mitigation measures precisely. Although machine learning algorithms have made great strides, their accuracy in flood susceptibility mapping (FSM) remains limited due to data dependence, interpretability, and explainability issues, overfitting, generalization difficulties, and hyperparameter tuning. This study suggests combining the Decision Tree (DT) algorithm with advanced, math-based metaheuristic optimization algorithms to address these limitations.
