The potential of carbonylation with methylglyoxal to alter HSA's binding affinity for copper(II) ions and its influence on the release of copper(II) ions from copper-HSA complexes were studied. The affinity of HSA to coordinate copper(II) decreased upon carbonylation of the Cys34-SH group. Carbonylation of copper-HSA complexes caused a decrease in Cys34-SH content, conformational changes and the release of copper(II) ions. The ratio between the percentage of reduction in the Cys34-SH group content and the percentage of release of copper(II) from complexes is 2.12 ± 0.28. Because the same ratio (1.96 ± 0.36) was obtained upon oxidation of the Cys34-SH group (with no changes in HSA conformation), the binding/release of copper (II) by HSA depended mainly on the redox state of the Cys34-SH group. The contents of Cys34-SH and HSA-bound copper(II) IONS in the diabetic group (0.457 ± 0.081 mol SH per mol HSA, 10.7 ± 0.01 mmol per mol HSA, resp.) were significantly lower (p < 0.01) compared to the control group (0.609 ± 0.027 mol SH per mol HSA; 13.4 ± 0.01 mmol per mol HSA, resp.). Very strong correlations between the values for HSA-SH and glycated haemoglobin, HbA1c, (R = -0.803, p < 0.01), and between the values for the HSA-bound copper(II) content and HSA-SH content (R = 0.841, p < 0.002) were found in the diabetic group. Thus, HSA carbonylation leads to decrease in HSA-SH content and to the impairment of its copper(II) binding capacity that could contribute to further enhancement of oxidative and carbonyl stress in diabetes (as well as in other diseases with carbonyl stress).

Nine metal complexes formed by three symmetric β-diketonates (, acetylacetonate (), 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-acetylacetonate (), and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionate ()) and three metal ions (with three different coordination geometries, , Be - tetrahedral, Cu - square planar, and Pb - "swing" square pyramidal) were investigated. The study combines structural analyses, vibrational spectroscopic techniques, and quantum chemical calculations with the aim of bridging crystal structure, electronic structure, molecular topology, and far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopic characteristics. The effect of intramolecular interactions on the structural, electronic, and spectroscopic features is the center of this study.

Copper(II) oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are used in different industries and agriculture, thus leading to their release to the environment, which raises concerns about their ecotoxicity and biosafety. The main toxicity mechanism of nanometals is oxidative stress as a result of the formation of reactive oxygen species caused by metal ions released from nanoparticles. Bacterial biofilms are more resistant to physical and chemical factors than are planktonic cells due to the extracellular polymeric matrix (EPM), which performs a protective function.

Background: Scedosporium apiospermum is a multidrug-resistant filamentous fungus that causes localized and disseminated diseases. Our group has previously described that metalbased complexes containing copper(II) or silver(I) ions complexed with 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6- dione (phendione) inhibited the viability of S. apiospermum conidial cells.

In this work, the mechanical properties of hydrogels based on linear polyethyleneimine (PEI) chemically crosslinked with ethyleneglycoldiglycidyl ether (EGDE) were improved by the ionic crosslinking with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). To this end, the quaternization of the nitrogen atoms present in the PEI structure was conducted to render a network with a permanent positive charge to interact with the negative charges of TPP. The co-crosslinking process was studied by H high-resolution magic angle spinning (H HRMAS) NMR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in combination with organic elemental analysis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Uniform, mesoporous copper(II) oxide nanospindles (CuO NSs) were synthesized via a method based on templated hydrothermal oxidation of copper in the presence of monodisperse poly(glycerol dimethacrylate--methacrylic acid) nanoparticles (poly(GDMA--MAA) NPs). Subsequent decoration of CuO NSs with a CaO nanoshell (CuO@CaO NSs) yielded a nanozyme capable of Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox cycling. Activation of the Cu(I)/Cu(II) cycle by exogenously generated HO from the CaO nanoshell significantly enhanced glutathione (GSH) depletion.
