Many RNA viruses employ internal ribosome entry sites (IRESs) in their genomic RNA to commandeer the host's translational machinery for replication. The IRES from encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) interacts with eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4 G (eIF4G), recruiting the ribosomal subunit for translation. Here, we analyze the three-dimensional structure of the complex composed of EMCV IRES, the HEAT1 domain fragment of eIF4G, and eIF4A, by cryo-electron microscopy.

Neonates, infants, and children have unique physiology and body surface areas that dramatically change during growth and development, and the substantial diversity of complicated pediatric illnesses and rare childhood diseases are distinct from the adult sphere. Unfortunately, medical innovation is generally constrained to retrofitting adult treatment strategies for this heterogeneous population. This conventional, but limited, approach ignores the dynamic biopsychosocial, growth, and developmental complexities that abound, as one progresses through this life cycle from newborn onward toward early adulthood.

Finkel, Eastwick, and Reis (2015; FER2015) argued that psychological science is better served by responding to apprehensions about replicability rates with contextualized solutions than with one-size-fits-all solutions. Here, we extend FER2015's analysis to suggest that much of the discussion of best research practices since 2011 has focused on a single feature of high-quality science-replicability-with insufficient sensitivity to the implications of recommended practices for other features, like discovery, internal validity, external validity, construct validity, consequentiality, and cumulativeness. Thus, although recommendations for bolstering replicability have been innovative, compelling, and abundant, it is difficult to evaluate their impact on our science as a whole, especially because many research practices that are beneficial for some features of scientific quality are harmful for others.

Control of cell volume and osmolarity is central to cellular homeostasis in all eukaryotes. It lies at the heart of the century-old problem of how plants regulate turgor, mineral and water transport. Plants use strongly electrogenic H-ATPases, and the substantial membrane voltages they foster, to drive solute accumulation and generate turgor pressure for cell expansion.
