The active vitamin A metabolite, all-trans-retinoic acid (RA), primes precursor dendritic cells (DCs) into a mucosal phenotype with tolerogenic properties characterized by the expression of integrin CD103. CD103 DCs can counteract pathogenic Th1 and Th17 in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or celiac disease (CD). Tolerogenic manipulation of DCs using nanoparticles carrying tolerogenic adjuvants and disease-specific antigens is a valuable treatment strategy to induce antigen-specific mucosal tolerance in vivo.

The intestinal mucosa is continually exposed to diverse microbial and dietary Ags, requiring coordinated efforts by specialized populations of regulatory T cells (Tregs) to maintain homeostasis. Suppressive mechanisms used by intestinal Tregs include the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10 and TGF-β. Defects in IL-10 signaling are associated with severe infantile enterocolitis in humans, and mice deficient in IL-10 or its receptors develop spontaneous colitis.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune disease with emerging environmental and microbiome risk factors. The western diet is typically deficient in magnesium (Mg), and there is some evidence suggesting that Mg may have anti-inflammatory properties. Introduction: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic liver disease caused by a perturbed immune system. The scarcity of short- and long-term immune monitoring of AIH hampered us to comprehend the interaction between immunosuppressive medication and immune homeostasis.
