We report a combined X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical modeling analysis of hybrid functional coatings constituted by fluorinated alkylsilane monolayers covalently grafted on a nanostructured ceramic oxide (Al2O3) thin film deposited on aluminum alloy substrates. Such engineered surfaces, bearing hybrid coatings obtained via a classic sol-gel route, have been previously shown to possess amphiphobic behavior (superhydrophobicity plus oleophobicity) and excellent durability, even under simulated severe working environments. Starting from XPS, SEM, and contact angle results and analysis, and combining it with DFT results, the present investigation offers a first mechanistic explanation at a molecular level of the peculiar properties of the hybrid organic-inorganic coating in terms of composition and surface structural arrangements. Theoretical modeling shows that the active fluorinated moiety is strongly anchored on the alumina sites with single Si-O-Al bridges and that the residual valence of Si is saturated by Si-O-Si bonds which form a reticulation with two vicinal fluoroalkylsilanes. The resulting hybrid coating consists of stable rows of fluorinated alkyl chains in reciprocal contact, which form well-ordered and packed monolayers.

The nature of explanation is an important area of inquiry in philosophy of science. Consensus has been that explanation in the cognitive and brain sciences is typically a special case of causal explanation, specifically, mechanistic explanation. But recently there has been increased attention to computational explanation in the brain sciences and to whether that can be understood as a variety of mechanistic explanation.

Drug-induced autoimmunity (DIA) is a non-IgE immune-related adverse drug reaction that poses substantial challenges in predictive toxicology due to its idiosyncratic nature, complex pathogenesis, and diverse clinical manifestations. To address these challenges, we developed InterDIA, an interpretable machine learning framework for predicting DIA toxicity based on molecular physicochemical properties. Multi-strategy feature selection and advanced ensemble resampling approaches were integrated to enhance prediction accuracy and overcome data imbalance.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a complex, progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons in the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord. Several neuroimaging techniques can help reveal the pathophysiology of ALS. One of these is the electroencephalogram (EEG), a noninvasive and relatively inexpensive tool for examining electrical activity of the brain with excellent temporal precision.

Introduction: Several aspects of the involvement of HPV in the pathogenesis of HPV-associated diseases remain poorly understood including mechanistic aspects of infection and the question of why the majority of HPV-positive HNSCC-patients are non-smokers, whereas HPV-negatives are smokers. Our previous research, based on 1,100 patient samples, hypothesized an explanation for this phenomenon: Smoking induces upregulation of a mucosal protective protein (SLPI), which competes with HPV for binding to Annexin A2 (AnxA2), pivotal for HPV cell entry. Here we investigate the mechanistic aspects of our hypothesis using transfection assays.

The resulting demographic trade-offs constrain the range of viable life-history strategies and are hypothesized to promote local coexistence. Tropical forests pose ideal systems to study demographic trade-offs as they have a high diversity of coexisting tree species whose life-history strategies tend to align along two orthogonal axes of variation: a growth-survival trade-off that separates species with fast growth from species with high survival and a stature-recruitment trade-off that separates species that achieve large stature from species with high recruitment.
