Although adenoviruses were identified as important respiratory pathogens many years ago, little information is available concerning the prevalence of different adenovirus serotypes, which are circulating and causing epidemics in Finnish military training centers. Over a period of five years from 2008 to 2012, 3577 respiratory specimens were collected from military conscripts presenting with symptoms compatible with acute respiratory tract infection. Upon initial testing for certain respiratory viruses by real-time PCR, 837 of these specimens were identified as adenovirus-positive. For 672 of these specimens, the serotype of the adenovirus responsible was successfully determined by DNA sequencing. Serotypes 1, 2, 3, and 4 were detected in 1, 3, 181, and 487 samples, respectively. Adenovirus epidemics were observed during each year of this study. Based on these findings, adenovirus vaccination should be considered for military conscripts in the Finnish Defence Forces.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the oral health status of military student pilots in Finland, revealing that they generally have better oral health compared to their peers in the same age group.
  • Data was collected from oral health examinations of 38 student pilots and a larger sample of 574 conscripts, following WHO and STROBE guidelines, focusing on metrics such as decayed, missing, and filled teeth.
  • Findings indicate that while a higher percentage of student pilots had no decayed teeth (42.1%), a significant portion (68.4%) exhibited moderate erosive tooth wear, contrasting with just 22.1% among other conscripts.

This paper examines internal migrant selection in Italy using individual height data from the 1951 and 1980 birth cohorts of military conscripts. Information on both place of birth and residence of conscripts allows us to compare migrants' heights to the height distributions of their non-migrant peers at the national level and to their populations of origin. Results suggest that migrants from southern Italy were negatively selected at the national level, while a positive selection in height emerged if compared to conscripts who remained in their macro-area of origin.

Associations of Atopic Dermatitis in Late Adolescence with Occupation, Mental Health, Income from Work and Marital Status: A National Longitudinal Study.

Acta Derm Venereol

January 2025

School of Medical Sciences, Örebro University, Örebro, Sweden; Department of Occupational and Environmental Dermatology, Lund University, Malmö, Sweden.

The main aim of this study was to evaluate longitudinal associations between atopic dermatitis (AD) in late adolescence and occupational socioeconomic group, labour market participation, income from work, and marital status later in adult life. Using Swedish population-based registry data a total of 205,394 men were included, born between 1952 and 1956 in Sweden and who underwent military conscription examination including assessment of atopic dermatitis (AD) and AD severity. The associations between AD and AD severity in late adolescence and labour market participation, income from work, marital status, and medication for anxiety and depression later in adult life were examined.

Previous studies have identified educational differences in early labour market exits, yet the mechanisms behind these disparities remain unclear. This study aims to examine to what extent common mental disorders (CMD) and alcohol-related morbidity can explain educational differences in early labour market exit. This cohort study included all men born 1951-53 who underwent conscription examination for military service in Sweden at age 18-20 (n = 136 466).
