Background: Revision of the Task Force diagnostic criteria for arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/dysplasia (ARVC/D) has increased their sensitivity for the diagnosis of early and familial forms of the disease. The epsilon wave is a major diagnostic criterion in the context of ARVC/D, which, however, remains not quantifiable and therefore may leave room for substantial subjective interpretation.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess interobserver agreement in epsilon wave definition and epsilon wave importance for ARVC/D diagnosis.

Methods: Electrocardiographic (ECG) tracings depicting leads V1, V2, and V3 collected from individuals evaluated for ARVC/D (n = 30) were given to panel members who were asked to respond to the question whether ECG patterns meet epsilon wave definition outlined by the Task Force diagnostic criteria. The prevalence and importance of epsilon waves for ARVC/D diagnosis were assessed in a pooled data set of patients with definite ARVC/D from European and American registries (n = 815).

Results: The number of ECG patterns identified as epsilon waves varied from 5 to 18 per reviewer (median 13 per reviewer). A unanimous agreement was reached for only 10 cases (33%), 2 of which qualified as epsilon waves and 8 as non-epsilon waves by all panel members. From a pooled data set, 106 patients reportedly had epsilon waves (13%). In 105 of 106 patients with epsilon waves (99%), exclusion of epsilon waves from the diagnostic score would not affect the "definite" diagnostic category.

Conclusion: Interobserver variability in the assessment of epsilon waves is high; however, the impact of epsilon waves on ARVC/D diagnosis is negligibly low. The results urge to exercise caution in the assessment of epsilon waves, especially in patients who would not otherwise meet diagnostic criteria.

Engineering an Ultrasound-Responsive Glycopolymersome for Hepatocyte-Specific Gene Delivery.

The ability to design liver-targeted gene delivery vectors is plagued with difficulties ranging from carrier-mediated cellular toxicity to challenges in encapsulating sensitive nucleic acids. Herein, we present an ultrasound-responsive glycopolymersome strategy for loading of nucleic acids and achieving hepatocyte-specific gene delivery. This glycopolymersome is self-assembled from a block copolymer, -acetylgalactosamine-grafted poly(glutamic acid)--poly(ε-caprolactone) (PGAGalNAc--PCL).

In this paper, a tunable and ultra-broadband terahertz (THz) absorber is proposed. The absorber, which is built upon the conventional metal-dielectric-metal tri-layer configuration, incorporates a KCl thin film within the dielectric gap situated between the top resonator and the middle dielectric layer. The simulation indicates that the absorber effectively captures more than 90% of terahertz waves between 3.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to enhance MRI imaging of the human brain using a helmet-shaped container filled with high-permittivity material (HPM) slurry to boost RF coil sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
  • Using electromagnetic simulations and in vivo experiments at 7 T, researchers tested various geometries of RF coil arrays combined with the HPM slurry helmet.
  • Results indicated significant improvements in SNR and RF coil sensitivity, with in vivo tests showing a 14.5% enhancement in SNR, suggesting that the helmet design could greatly improve MRI quality for brain imaging.

With the development of technology, multifunctional multiband emitters have been paid much attention due to their wide range of applications, such as LIDAR detection, spectroscopic sensing, and infrared thermal management. However, the development of such emitters is impeded by incompatible structural requirements of different electromagnetic wavebands. Here, we demonstrate coupled modulation between near-infrared (NIR) laser-wavelength and long-wavelength-infrared by constructing a multifunctional emitter (MFE) with a structure of Al/HfO/VO, utilizing the phase transition of VO.

Durum Wheat at Risk in a Climate Change Scenario: The Carotenoid Content is Affected by Short Heat Waves.

Short heat waves (SHW), defined as periods of several consecutive days with high temperatures above the developmental optimum, will become more frequent due to climate change. The impact of SHW on yield and yield-related parameters has received considerable interest, but their effects on grain quality remain poorly understood. We employed a simulation approach to investigate the impact of SHW on durum wheat quality over a 7 day period, starting 1 week after anthesis.
