Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Haemophilus influenzae in abscesses in adults and to determine their antibiotic resistance patterns.

Methods: H. influenzae strains isolated from abscesses during an eleven-year period were determined retrospectively and the stored strains were tested for ampicillin, amoxicillin/calvulanic acid, cefuroxime, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, tetracycline, and imipenem resistance by broth microdilution method. The production of β-lactamase was detected using the nitrocefin disc test and real-time PCR.

Results: A total of 26 H. influenzae isolated strains were found. According to ampicillin resistance and β-lactamase production, 2 strains were determined as BLPAR, 1 strain BLNAR, 1 strain BLPACR, and 22 strains as BLNAS. Cefuroxime resistance was detected in 4 strains, tetracycline resistance was detected in 4 strains, and no resistance to cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, imipenem, azithromycin and levofloxacin was detected.

Conclusions: H. influenzae should be taken into account for the proper management of abscesses.

Chronotype refers to individual differences in the circadian phase that affect a person's biological and psychological functioning. One of the most useful tools for measuring chronotype in children aged 4 - 11 years is the Children's Chronotype Questionnaire (CCTQ). Therefore, due to the importance of measuring chronotype in children and also the lack of a standard scale in Iran, this study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the Persian version of this questionnaire for children.

Article Synopsis
  • Kerion is a severe, inflammatory form of tinea capitis characterized by painful swelling and hair loss, but there's limited research on it.
  • This study analyzed 132 hospitalized patients with Kerion over 11 years, finding that most were young boys from rural areas, with a significant number having animal contact.
  • The research offers valuable insights into the epidemiology and treatment of Kerion, suggesting that more studies are needed to further understand risk factors and improve prevention strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the clinical and radiographic outcomes of two surgical methods (orthogonal vs. parallel plating) for treating intercondylar fractures of the humerus in 50 adult patients.
  • Both groups showed similar preoperative characteristics and functional outcomes, with no significant differences found in the Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS).
  • Radiographically, both plating methods demonstrated comparable healing times and complication rates, indicating that both techniques are effective for this type of fracture, highlighting the need for further research to determine the best approach for different fracture types.

Background: Kenya introduced a monovalent rotavirus vaccine administered orally at 6 and 10 weeks of age into her National Immunization Program in July 2014. The study evaluated the long-term impact of the vaccine on hospitalization for all-cause and rotavirus-specific acute gastroenteritis (AGE) and strain epidemiology in Kenya.

Methods: Data on all-cause and rotavirus-specific AGE and strain distribution were derived from an eleven-year hospital-based surveillance of AGE among children aged <5 years at Kiambu County Teaching and Referral Hospital (KCTRH) in Central Kenya between 2009 and 2020.

Objectives: Pain is a common symptom in prehospital emergency care and pain treatment in this context can be challenging. While previous research has assessed the use of morphine and other synthetic opioids for pain management in this setting, the evaluation of alfentanil is limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and effect of intravenous alfentanil when administered by ambulance nurses in prehospital emergency care.
