A combination of density functional theory calculations, hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX) reactions, ion mobility-mass spectrometry, and isotope labeling tandem mass spectrometry was used to study gas-phase "host-guest" type interactions of a benzyloxycarbonyl (Z)-capped proline (P) glycine (G) model dipeptide (i.e., Z-PG) and its various structural analogues with ND3. It is shown that in a solvent-free environment, structural differences between protonated and alkali metal ion (Na(+), K(+), or Cs(+))-complexed species of Z-PG affect ND3 adduct formation. Specifically, [Z-PG + H](+) and [Z-PG-OCH3 + H](+) formed gas-phase ND3 adducts ([Z-PG (or Z-PG-OCH3) + H + ND3](+)) but no ND3 adducts were observed for [Z-PG + alkali metal](+) or [Z-PG + H - CO2](+). Experimentally measured and theoretically calculated collision cross sections (CCSs) of protonated and alkali metal ion-complexed Z-PG species showed similar trends that agreed with the observed structural differences from molecular modeling results. Moreover, results from theoretical ND3 affinity calculations were consistent with experimental HDX observations, indicating a more stable ND3 adduct for [Z-PG + H](+) compared to [Z-PG + alkali metal](+) species. Molecular modeling and experimental MS results for [Z-PG + H](+) and [Z-PG + alkali metal](+) suggest that optimized cation-π and hydrogen bonding interactions of carbonyl groups in final products are important for ND3 adduct formation. The work is dedicated to further development of our described method for analyzing mass spectra of biomolecules acquired as a result of hydrogen-deuterium exchange reactions (HDXs). The modified method consists of separating HDX distributions via their approximations by a minimum number of components corresponding to independent H/D substitutions and independent charge carrier retentions in different spatial isoforms or conformations of biomolecules with unknown primary structures. In this case, neither the natural isotopic distribution nor the exact number of active sites involved in HDXs and H or D attachments can be determined in advance.

A metalloligand [CuL] (H2L = N-α-methylsalicylidene-N'-salicylidene-1,3-propanediamine) was reacted with a series (Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pr3+, Nd3+ and Sm3+) of redox-inactive metal ions (in excess) with different Lewis acidities in acetonitrile to form heterometallic complexes in situ. In the cases of K+ and Zn2+, single crystals were isolated from their respective solutions and solved. The complexes were found to be trinuclear with the phenoxido bridge between the redox-inactive metals and the copper center having closest equilibrium distance.

Coordination and supramolecular assemblies of a fully substituted cyclopentanocucurbit[6]uril (CyPQ[6]) with a series of lanthanide cations (Ln) have been investigated in the presence of tetrachlorozincate anion ([ZnCl]). X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis has revealed that the interaction of CyPQ[6] and a series of Lncations unexpectedly results in the formation of at least seven different CyPQ[6]-based coordination complex adduct and supramolecular assemblies groups, including with (1) La, Cecations; (2) Pr, Ndcations; (3) Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy with P1̅ or P1 space group, in which CyPQ[6] molecules coordinate alternatively with Lncations and form linear coordination polymers; (4) CyPQ[6] molecules interact alternatively with [Ho(HO)] aqueous complexes and form linear supramolecular chains; CyPQ[6] molecules can assemble two different Ln free porous supramolecular assemblies from CyPQ[6]-Ln(NO)-ZnCl-HCl systems, Ln = Tm, Yb, and Lu; however, no solid crystals were obtained from system containing Ercation. Thus, these differences could lead CyPQ[6] to be useful in not only the isolation of lighter lanthanides from their heavier lanthanides but also special selectivity for different volatile organic compounds.

The interactions between a series of lanthanide cations (Ln ) and methyl-substituted cucurbiturils (SPMeQ[5] and SHMeQ[6]) derived from a 3α-methyl glycoluril have been investigated. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that both SPMeQ[5] and SHMeQ[6] selectively interact with certain lanthanide ions. SPMeQ[5] forms coordination capsules in the presence of [CdCl ] .
