Purpose: An evaluation of the visual and refractive results was undertaken one year after implantation of a trifocal diffractive toric intraocular lens (IOL) during cataract surgery.

Methods: In a prospective study patients with a calculated postoperative corneal astigmatism of ≥ 0.75 D received a diffractive trifocal toric IOL (AT LISA tri toric 939MP, Carl Zeiss Meditech, Jena, Germany) during cataract surgery. One year postoperatively the near, intermediate and distance visual acuity, corrected and uncorrected vision as well as refraction were evaluated.

Results: 20 patients (40 eyes) with a median age of 59 ± 11 years of which 15 were female underwent bilateral cataract surgery. One year postoperatively a binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 0.10 logMAR ± 0.11 and a corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) of 0.00 logMAR ± 0.08 could be found. Binocular intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) and near visual acuity (UNVA) were 0.00 logMAR ± 0.05 and 0.09 logMAR ± 0.07, respectively. 100 % of patients were between ± 1.0 D from target refraction. Even 1 year after surgery no patient had an IOL rotation greater than 5°.

Conclusion: The implantation of a trifocal toric intraocular lens offers an effective way for visual rehabilitation in near, intermediate and far distances with a good rotational stability of the IOL platform.

Coats-Like reaction post-vitreoretinal surgery for PDR managed with laser photocoagulation and adjunctive intravitreal steroids- a case report.

BMC Ophthalmol

January 2025

Dept. of Retina and Vitreous, Narayana Nethralaya, #121/C, 1st R Block, Chord Road, Rajaji Nagar, Bengaluru, 560010, India.

Purpose: To report a rare case of a Coats-like response developing after vitreoretinal surgery for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and its successful management with retinal laser photocoagulation and adjunctive intravitreal steroids.

Case Description: A 52-year-old woman with a five-year history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension presented with decreased vision in the left eye (counting fingers at 1 m). Examination revealed high-risk PDR in both eyes, with a subtotal macula-off combined retinal detachment in the left eye.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation on anterior chamber angle parameters and posterior segment structures in highly myopic eyes and explore potential correlations between these changes. The study aimed to assess alterations in superficial and deep vessel density (SVD, DVD), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness to clarify the safety profile of ICL implantation.

Methods: Prospective observational study, included 36 highly myopic eyes undergoing ICL implantation in surgery group and 23 non-surgical control eyes in non-surgery group.

Introduction: A population-based survey of the prevalence and causes of blindness and vision impairment among people 50 years and older living in the State of Qatar.

Methods: A Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) methodology, applied from May 2022 to June 2023, utilized stratified two-stage cluster random sampling to select 5060 persons 50 years and older resident in Qatar from 145 communities chosen by probability proportional to size. Communities were stratified by Qatari and non-Qatari nationality.

Purpose: To develop a simple tool to remove retained submacular perfluorocarbon liquid bubbles (R-PFCL) and to inject recombinant tissue plasminogen activator safely in subretinal space in submacular hematomas.

Method: A retrospective, interventional study was performed where a simple homemade micro-viscous fluid control was developed to gain access to subretinal space in a controlled way. The rubber cap of the plunger of a 1-mL syringe was cut; this cut rubber cap of the plunger was fitted inside an empty 1-mL tuberculin syringe, and its end was fitted with the tubings of viscous fluid control of the vitrectomy machine.

Purpose: To describe a custom bent 27-gauge needle-guided suture snare technique for scleral fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PCIOL).

Methods: An 8-0 polypropylene suture was threaded into the lumen of a custom bent 27-gauge needle, and the needle tip was advanced into the eye from the intraocular lens (IOL) fixation point. The suture was threaded through the posterior limbal incision inside the IOL haptic loop and pulled out.
