Interferon signalling and non-canonical inflammasome activation promote host protection against multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii.

Commun Biol

November 2024

Division of Immunology and Infectious Disease, The John Curtin School of Medical Research, the Australian National University, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii are of major concern worldwide due to their resistance to last resort carbapenem and polymyxin antibiotics. To develop an effective treatment strategy, it is critical to better understand how an A. baumannii MDR bacterium interacts with its mammalian host.

Inulin as a natural polysaccharide regulates intestinal microorganisms, and improves the immune and gastrointestinal function. In order to explore the effect of inulin on pulmonary metastasis of colon cancer, we set up a CT26 injected pulmonary metastatic model. The results showed that inulin used alone did not improve pulmonary metastasis of colon cancer, while inulin combined with rifaximin significantly prolonged the survival time of mice, and inhibited pulmonary metastasis compared with model and inulin groups.

Background: DNA methylation may be a link between HIV, aging, and the increased risk of lung comorbidities. We investigated whether bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells of people living with HIV (PLWH) demonstrate epigenetic disruptions and advanced epigenetic aging.

Methods: BAL cell DNA methylation from 25 PLWH and 16 HIV-uninfected individuals were tested for differential methylation of Alu and LINE-1 sites, markers of aging.

Artificial intelligence for ventricular arrhythmia capability using ambulatory electrocardiograms.

Eur Heart J Digit Health

May 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Leicester, Glenfield Hospital, Groby Road, Leicester LE3 9QP, UK.

Aims: European and American clinical guidelines for implantable cardioverter defibrillators are insufficiently accurate for ventricular arrhythmia (VA) risk stratification, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Artificial intelligence offers a novel risk stratification lens through which VA capability can be determined from the electrocardiogram (ECG) in normal cardiac rhythm. The aim of this study was to develop and test a deep neural network for VA risk stratification using routinely collected ambulatory ECGs.
