Hydration of sulfuric acid plays a key role in new-particle formation in the atmosphere. It has been recently proposed that proton dynamics is crucial in the stabilization of these clusters. One key question is how water molecules mediate proton transfer from sulfuric acid, and hence how the deprotonation state of the acid molecule behaves as a function concentration. We address the proton transfer in aqueous sulfuric acid with O K edge and S L edge core-excitation spectra recorded using inelastic X-ray scattering and with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations in the concentration range of 0-18.0 M. Throughout this range, we quantify the acid-water interaction with atomic resolution. Our simulations show that the number of donated hydrogen bonds per Owater increases from 1.9 to 2.5 when concentration increases from 0 to 18.0 M, in agreement with a rapid disappearance of the pre-edge feature in the O K edge spectrum. The simulations also suggest that for 1.5 M sulfuric acid SO4(2-) is most abundant and that its concentration falls monotonously with increasing concentration. Moreover, the fraction of HSO4(-) peaks at ∼12 M.

Experimental and theoretical studies on the compositional changes of new particle formation in the nucleation and initial growth stages of acid-base systems (2 and 5 nm) are extremely challenging. This study proposes a machine learning method for predicting the composition change of the sulfuric acid-dimethylamine system in the transformation from monomer to nanoparticle by learning the structure and composition information on small-sized sulfuric acid (SA)-dimethylamine (DMA) molecular clusters. Based on this method and changes in components, we found that the sulfuric acid-dimethylamine growth was mainly through the alternate adsorption of (SA)(DMA), (SA)(DMA), and (SA) clusters at the early stage of nucleation, which accounted for about 70, 20, and 10%, respectively.

Introduction: Myocardial protection with cardioplegia is a crucial approach to mitigate myocardial damage during coronary bypass grafting surgery (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The major component of the del Nido cardioplegia solution, Plasma-Lyte A, is difficult to obtain in Iran due to high cost. However, achieving an effective and durable bond with enamel is challenging because of its chemical inertness and low surface energy, and data on the effects of different surface treatments on the durability of PEEK-enamel bonds are scarce.
Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate airborne-particle abrasion, sulfuric acid etching, and the combined use of these treatments on the bonding durability of PEEK-enamel bonds and to gain a deeper understanding of their bonding mechanism.
