The Polygenic Nature of Multiple Sclerosis: Genetic Variants, Immunological Modulation, and Environmental Connections.

Endocr Metab Immune Disord Drug Targets

December 2024

Institute of Neurobiology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Acad. G. Bonchev St., Block 23, Sofia1113, Bulgaria.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a debilitating inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system characterized by demyelination, is significantly influenced by polygenic variations. Although the precise cause of MS remains unclear, it is believed to arise from a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Recent investigations have focused on the polygenic nature of genetic alterations linked to MS risk.

Neurodegenerative diseases, characterized by the progressive deterioration of neuronal function and structure, pose significant global public health and economic challenges. Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a key regulator of neuroplasticity and neuronal survival, has emerged as a critical biomarker for various neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) assays, face limitations in terms of sensitivity, stability, reproducibility, and cost-effectiveness.

: Vitamin D deficiency is increasingly recognized as a global health concern, with potential implications for cancer development and progression. This systematic review investigated the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in pediatric cancer patients and its potential impact on clinical outcomes. : A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, to identify the relevant studies published between 2009 and July 2024.

Optomechanical micro-rheology of complex fluids at ultra-high frequency.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Matériaux et Phénomènes Quantiques, Université Paris Cité, CNRS UMR 7162, Paris, France.

We present an optomechanical method for locally measuring the rheological properties of complex fluids in the ultra-high frequency range (UHF). A mechanical disk of microscale volume is used as an oscillating probe that monitors a liquid at rest, while the oscillation is optomechanically transduced. An analytical model for fluid-structure interactions is used to deduce the rheological properties of the liquid.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease with a number of immunological aberrations in the mechanisms of innate and adaptive immune responses. Spontaneous and induced mouse models of the disease have contributed significantly to the advancement in lupus treatments. The involvement of humanized models, engrafted with lupus patients' immune cells, represented the possibility to study the development of SLE.
