We demonstrate the use of cation exchange to synthesize ultrathin and thickness-controlled Cu2-xSe nanosheets (NSs) beginning with CdSe NSs. In this manner, extremely thin (i.e., 1.6 nm thickness) Cu2-xSe NSs, beyond which can be made directly, have been obtained. Furthermore, they represent the thinnest NSs produced via cation exchange. Notably, the exchange reaction preserves the starting morphology of the CdSe sheets and also retains their cubic crystal structure. The resulting nonstoichiometric and cubic Cu2-xSe NSs are stable and do not exhibit any signs of Cu or Se oxidation after exposure to air for 2 weeks. Resulting NSs also show the existence of a localized surface plasmon resonance in the infrared due to the presence of copper vacancies. Efforts to isolate intermediates during the cation exchange reaction show that it occurs via a mechanism where entire sheets are rapidly converted into the final product once the exchange reaction commences, precluding the isolation of alloyed species.

Five alkali metal manganese(III) fluorophosphates, KMn(POF)F (I), RbMn(POF)F (II), RbMn(POF)(PO)F (III), RbMn(POF)(PO)F (IV), and CsMn(POF)F (V), were successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal method. The monofluorophosphate anion (POF) groups work as "chemical scissors" to promote low-dimensional spin structures with the aid of alkali metal cations. I and II had an = 2 uniform chain structure formed by corner-sharing -MnOF octahedra.

Experimental Center of Advanced Materials, School of Materials Science & Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing 100081, China.

In this study, employing a simple anion exchange strategy and straightforward three-step synthetic route, a pair of promising nitrogen-rich heterocyclic cation and oxygen-rich anion were assembled together to generate two novel dinitramide energetic salts, both of which exhibit prominent detonation performance comparable to benchmark explosive RDX while possessing significantly lower mechanical sensitivity than RDX, thereby highlighting them as promising candidates for advanced secondary explosives. This work has directly led to a practical protocol for the design of chloride-free environmentally friendly IEMs, and accelerates the development of organic explosives with high-energy and low-sensitivity.

The unique properties and versatile applications of natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES) have sparked significant interest in the field of green chemistry. Comprised of natural components that form liquids at room temperature through strong noncovalent electrostatic interaction, these solvents are cost-effective, nontoxic, and versatile. Betaine chloride-based NaDES, in particular, have shown promise in biocatalysis and sugar extraction due to their excellent properties.

The bioactive peptides in Jinhua ham could be released into the broth during cooking. After comparing peptide antibacterial activity from Jinhua ham broth with varying cooking durations, the cooking-2-h broths were selected for further analysis using cation-exchange and reverse-phase-liquid chromatography. The purified peptide sequences were subsequently synthesized and tested for their antibacterial activity.

From solubility to efficiency: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) regeneration from anion exchange resins.

January 2025

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122, USA. Electronic address:

This study investigated the regenerability of anion exchange resins for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), focusing on the interaction between regenerant composition and resin characteristics. The influence of salt type and concentration on PFAS solubility revealed a general decline in perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) solubility with increased salt concentrations, most strongly with KCl followed by NaCl and NHCl. Mixed solubility results were observed for perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).
