In the framework of irreversible thermodynamics, we show that the sedimentation current in electrolyte solutions is mathematically equivalent to the low frequency limit of the ionic vibration current, appearing in the presence of an acoustic wave. This non-trivial result is obtained thanks to a careful choice of the reference frame used to express the mass fluxes in the context of electroacoustics. Coupled transport phenomena in electrolyte solutions can also be investigated in a mechanical framework, with a set of Newtonian equations for the dynamics of charged solutes. Both in the context of sedimentation and of electroacoustics, we show that the results obtained in the mechanical framework, in the ideal case (i.e., without interactions between ions), do satisfy the Onsager's reciprocal relations. We also derive the general relation between corrective forces accounting for ionic interactions which must be fulfilled so that the Onsager's reciprocal relations are verified. Finally, we show that no additional diffusion term needs to be taken into account in the flux of solutes (far from the walls), even if local concentration gradients exist, contrarily to what was done previously in the literature.

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) generates giant spin polarization in transport through chiral molecules, paving the way for novel spintronic devices and enantiomer separation. Unlike conventional transport, CISS magnetoresistance (MR) violates Onsager's reciprocal relation, exhibiting significant resistance changes when reversing electrode magnetization at zero bias. However, its underlying mechanism remains unresolved.

A thermodynamic based constitutive model considering the mutual influence of multiple physical fields.

In multiple physical fields, the mutual influence among these fields can significantly impact material elastoplasticity. This paper proposes a thermodynamic-based constitutive model that incorporates the mutual influence of multiple physical fields. Rather than treating physical field characteristics as adjustable "parameters" affecting material coefficients, the proposed model employs a thermodynamic dissipation potential derived from the Onsager reciprocity relations, accounting for thermodynamic forces coupling.

Multispecies Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook models and the Onsager reciprocal relations.

It is shown that most of the existing versions of the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model-those whose coefficient are independent of the molecular velocity-do not satisfy the Onsager relations. This circumstance poses a problem when calibrating these models, making their transport properties match those of a specific fluid.

Nematodynamics with odd and rotational viscosities.

Department of Chemical Engineering, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, 32000, Haifa, Israel.

We explore a novel mechanism of interactions between nematic order and flow including odd and rotational viscosities, and investigate activity-induced instabilities in the framework of this model. We show how these modes of viscous dissipation can be incorporated in the Ericksen-Leslie formalism, but it does not eliminate deficiencies of the approach based on Onsager's reciprocal relations that lead to spurious instabilities. The suggested way of deriving nematodynamic equations, based on a specific mechanism applicable to rigid rods, is not universal, but it avoids referring to Onsager's relations and avoids spurious instabilities in the absence of an active inputs.

Antiferromagnetic magnonic charge current generation via ultrafast optical excitation.

Nat Commun

Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials (MOE), School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Néel spin-orbit torque allows a charge current pulse to efficiently manipulate the Néel vector in antiferromagnets, which offers a unique opportunity for ultrahigh density information storage with high speed. However, the reciprocal process of Néel spin-orbit torque, the generation of ultrafast charge current in antiferromagnets has not been demonstrated. Here, we show the experimental observation of charge current generation in antiferromagnetic metallic MnAu thin films using ultrafast optical excitation.
