Background/objectives: There is scattered information in the scientific literature regarding the characterization of probiotic bacteria found in fermented milk beverages and the beneficial effects of probiotic bacteria on human health. Our objective was to gather the available information on the use of probiotic bacteria in the prevention of civilization diseases, with a special focus on the prevention of obesity, diabetes, and cancer.

Methods: We carried out a literature review including the following keywords, either individually or collectively: lactic acid bacteria; probiotic bacteria; obesity; lactose intolerance; diabetes; cancer protection; civilization diseases; intestinal microbiota; intestinal pathogens.

Neuroinflammatory Loop in Schizophrenia, Is There a Relationship with Symptoms or Cognition Decline?

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Departamento de Ciencias Biológicas y Químicas, Facultad De Medicina y Ciencia, Universidad San Sebastián, Sede Tres Pascualas Lientur 1457, Concepción 4080871, Chile.

Schizophrenia (SZ), a complex psychiatric disorder of neurodevelopment, is characterised by a range of symptoms, including hallucinations, delusions, social isolation and cognitive deterioration. One of the hypotheses that underlie SZ is related to inflammatory events which could be partly responsible for symptoms. However, it is unknown how inflammatory molecules can contribute to cognitive decline in SZ.

Bending the curve of biodiversity loss requires a 'satnav' for nature.

Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci

January 2025

Biodiversity Futures Lab, Natural History Museum, London SW7 5BD, UK.

Georgina Mace proposed bending the curve of biodiversity loss as a fitting ambition for the Convention on Biological Diversity. The new Global Biodiversity Monitoring Framework (GBMF) may increase the chances of meeting the goals and targets in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), which requires bending the curve. To meet the outcome goals of KMGBF, the GBMF should support adaptive policy responses to the state of biodiversity, which in turn requires a 'satnav' for nature.

Mid-water column turbulence has been shown to cause elevated vertical nutrient flux at the shelf edge in the northeastern North Sea. Here, we demonstrate that phytoplankton communities in this region tend to be dominated by larger cells (estimated from percentage of chlorophyll captured on a 10 μm filter) than beyond the shelf edge. F/F (PSII electron transport capacity) corrected for photoinhibition in the surface layer correlated in this study with the percentage of chlorophyll captured on a 10 µm filter (assumed to be large cells), suggesting that the phytoplankton community was responding to increased nutrients in the euphotic zone by increasing photosynthetic efficiency and altering community composition.

From Structure to Function: How Prebiotic Diversity Shapes Gut Integrity and Immune Balance.

Nutrients

December 2024

Department of Food Science and Experimental Nutrition, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of São Paulo, São Paulo 05508-000, SP, Brazil.

The microbiota stability, diversity, and composition are pillars for an efficient and beneficial symbiotic relationship between its host and itself. Microbial dysbiosis, a condition where a homeostatic bacterial community is disturbed by acute or chronic events, is a predisposition for many diseases, including local and systemic inflammation that leads to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and some types of cancers. Classical dysbiosis occurs in the large intestine.
