We study the spontaneous nucleation and growth of sodium chloride crystals induced by controlled evaporation in confined geometries (microcapillaries) spanning several orders of magnitude in volume. In all experiments, the nucleation happens reproducibly at a very high supersaturation S ∼ 1.6 and is independent of the size, shape, and surface properties of the microcapillary. We show from classical nucleation theory that this is expected: S ∼ 1.6 corresponds to the point where nucleation first becomes observable on experimental time scales. A consequence of the high supersaturations reached at the onset of nucleation is the very rapid growth of a single skeletal (Hopper) crystal. Experiments on porous media also reveal the formation of Hopper crystals in the entrapped liquid pockets in the porous network and consequently underline the fact that sodium chloride can easily reach high supersaturations, in spite of what is commonly assumed for this salt.

Using the Ordos Basin dry sandstone and sandstone saturated with different saline concentrations as research subjects, a self-developed constant temperature and pressure CO2 injection simulation device was employed to conduct permeability tests on sandstone under varying effective stresses and CO2 injection pressures. The test results indicated that during the CO2 injection process, the permeability of dry sandstone was two orders of magnitude higher than that of sandstones saturated with different saline concentrations. When the effective stress increases from 10 MPa to 28 MPa, the fissure compressibility of reservoir sandstone is influenced by the saturation of different saline concentrations, with the compressibility coefficients for 0%, 15%, and 30% saline-saturated sandstone being 0.

The target of rapamycin(TOR)gene is closely related to metabolism and cellular aging, but it is unclear whether the TOR pathways mediate endurance exercise against the accelerated aging of skeletal muscle induced by high salt intake. In this study, muscular TOR gene overexpression and RNAi were constructed by constructing MhcGAL4/TOR-overexpression and MhcGAL4/TORUAS-RNAi systems in Drosophila. The results showed that muscle TOR knockdown and endurance exercise significantly increased the climbing speed, climbing endurance, the expression of autophagy related gene 2(ATG2), silent information regulator 2(SIR2), and pparγ coactivator 1(PGC-1α) genes, and superoxide dismutases(SOD) activity, but it decreased the expression of the TOR gene and reactive oxygen species(ROS) level, and it protected the myofibrillar fibers and mitochondria of skeletal muscle in Drosophila on a high-salt diet.

Adding salt to foods and risk of incident depression and anxiety.

BMC Med

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Peking University, Haidian District, 38 Xueyuan Road, Beijing, 100191, China.

Background: Diet is a well-known determinant of mental health outcomes. However, epidemiologic evidence on salt consumption with the risk of developing depression and anxiety is still very limited. This study aimed to examine the association between adding salt to foods and incident depression and anxiety longitudinally.

Purpose: To report a case of herpes simplex virus (HSV) endotheliitis inducing acute interface fluid syndrome in a patient with a remote history of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).

Methods: Case report and literature review.

Results: A 51-year-old man with a history of LASIK 16 years prior presented with unilateral HSV endotheliitis and was found to have acute interface fluid syndrome secondary to endothelial decompensation.

This study reports a simple and rapid aptamer-based sensor platform designed for the sensitive and selective detection of human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Under standard conditions, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) remain dispersed and exhibit a characteristic peak at 520 nm. However, the addition of sodium chloride (NaCl) destabilizes the charge of the solution, leading to the aggregation of AuNPs.
