Localization of the greater occipital nerve through palpation of bony landmarks: A cadaveric study.

Clin Neurol Neurosurg

August 2024

Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine - Southern Utah,  255 East Center Street, Ivins, UT 84738, USA.

Objective: to provide anatomic confirmation that standard methods which practitioners skilled in palpation use, can reliably identify the most likely site of emergence of the greater occipital nerve in most patients. The location and frequency of subcutaneous emergence of the greater occipital nerve and occipital artery with respect to the external occipital protuberance-mastoid line are reported.

Methods: The external occipital protuberance and the mastoid processes were identified by palpation bilaterally on 57 body donors and the medial trisection point of a line connecting these bony landmarks was identified.

[Microanatomical Investigation of the Subtemporal Transtentorial Approach].

Sichuan Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban

March 2024

( 242000) Department of Neurosurgery, Xuancheng Central Hospital, Xuancheng 242000, China.

Objective: To study the microanatomic structure of the subtemporal transtentorial approach to the lateral side of the brainstem, and to provide anatomical information that will assist clinicians to perform surgeries on the lateral, circumferential, and petroclival regions of the brainstem.

Methods: Anatomical investigations were conducted on 8 cadaveric head specimens (16 sides) using the infratemporal transtentorial approach. The heads were tilted to one side, with the zygomatic arch at its highest point.

Background: Left ventricular (LV) thrombus is a lethal complication of coronary artery disease that can lead to embolization and sudden death. There is no clear consensus on the optimal treatment for LV thrombi. There is a paucity of case series about surgical excision of LV thrombus in patients with coronary vessel disease.

The posterior malleolus of the tibia is commonly accessed surgically through the posterolateral approach. This approach gives good access to the fibula and lateral aspect of the posterior tibia, however; there is little known on the vascular risks with this approach. The aim of this study was to assess and describe the anatomy of the fibular artery and its branches at the ankle region and relate it to the surgical access of the posterior malleolus.

This study describes the anatomy of the pituitary gland during endoscopic endonasal surgery. Before surgery, the extent of pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus and bony septations in the sphenoid sinus should be evaluated using computed tomography. After wide sphenoidotomy, several important surgical landmarks, including the medial and lateral opticocarotid recesses and carotid protuberances, can be observed in the sphenoid sinus.
