Several chronic transmissible (e.g. AIDS) and non transmissible diseases like cadiovascular disease, are associated with oxidative stress (EOX) and dyslipidemia. Has been reported that Spirulina can reduce them, this has been demonstrated in vitro and in animal models but scarcely in humans. Through a systematic review on last 5 years (keywords: Spirulina AND cholesterol, Spirulina AND oxidative stress) 8 intervention studies with humans were reported, finding that oral (1-10 g/d) subchronic (0.5-6 month) administration of Spirulina appears to have and hypolipidemic and antioxidant effect. However, no study was properly randomized and/or controlled and no biological mechanism was proposed to support these findings. The level of evidence and the absence of appropriate experimental designs do not allow validating Spirulina as a functional food for preventing dyslipidemic diseases and EOX, and hereby decrease the CVD. We do not found papers relating harmful effect.

Hypertriglyceridemia has serious health risks such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, nephropathy, and others. Fenofibrate is an effective hypolipidemic drug, but its benefits for ameliorating disorders associated with hypertriglyceridemia failed to be proven in clinical trials. To search for possible causes of this situation and possibilities of their favorable influence, we tested the effect of FF monotherapy and the combination of fenofibrate with silymarin on metabolic disorders in a unique model of hereditary hypertriglyceridemic rats (HHTg).

Background And Aim: Formononetin (FMN) is a compound isolated from Astragalus membranaceus, that exhibits a range of pharmacological activities, including antitumor, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, and antioxidant effects. Although preliminary study suggests that FMN have a therapeutic role in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), its specific mechanism of action requires further investigation. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism by which FMN treats DSS-induced colitis in mice.

A Review of the Antiviral Activity of Berberine.

Curr Drug Discov Technol

January 2025

Antimicrobial Resistance Research Center, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran.

Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid with strong pharmacological activity such as analgesic, antioxidant, neuroprotective, antivirus, anti-inflammatory, anti-seizure, anti-obesity, and hypolipidemic effects. Accumulated evidence indicates berberine plays an inhibitory role against infection of numerous viruses, including human immunodeficiency virus, respiratory syncytial virus, hepatitis C virus, human papillomavirus, human cytomegalovirus, and influenza virus. Berberine's antiviral action has shown promise, making it a viable option for synergistically enhancing the inhibitory effect of current antiviral medicines.

Metabolic syndrome is a clustering of metabolic abnormalities and anthropometric factors that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. As the search for effective treatments intensifies, attention has turned towards natural substances with potential medicinal benefits. Among them, vanillic acid, a phenolic acid present in many plants, has attracted some attention due to its wide range of biological activities.

Dynamic high-pressure microfluidization (DHPM) is an emerging treatment technology and has been widely used for the recovery of natural polysaccharides. The aim of the present contribution is to discuss the DHPM-assisted extraction and processing of polysaccharides from some foods and by-products by reviewing the instrument and working principle, procedures, key parameters, and effects of DHPM on the structures, food properties, and bioactivities of resulting polysaccharides. It was found that a DHPM instrument with Z-type chamber is preferable for extracting polysaccharides, and a DHPM with Y-type chamber is applicable for processing polysaccharides.
