In forensic neuropathology, the β-amyloid precursor protein (β-APP) immunostain is used to diagnose axonal injury (AI). The two most common aetiologies are traumatic (TAI) and ischaemic (vascular; VAI). We aimed to identify background characteristics and neuropathology findings that are suggestive of TAI, VAI, or no AI in neuropathologically examined medico-legal autopsy cases.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is considered a major cause of death globally, resulting from trauma. Decompressive craniectomy (DC) may improve functional outcomes in patients with TBI and its associated complications. This study was designed to determine safety and efficacy of DC in improving clinical outcomes in TBI patients compared to standard therapy.

Here we describe the derivation and validation of a prognostic nomogram for patients with Traumatic Intracranial Hemorrhage (tICH) after surgical evacuation. This is a retrospective study based on 245 patients admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery of Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, between August 2005, and August 2023. We divided the dataset into primary and validation data by the ratio of 7:3.

Chitinase 3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1) is emerging as a promising biomarker for assessing intracranial lesion burden and predicting prognosis in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Following experimental TBI, Chi3l1 transcripts were detected in reactive astrocytes located within the pericontusional cortex. However, the cellular sources of CHI3L1 in response to hemorrhagic contusions in human brain remain unidentified.

Background: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and Adjustment Disorder (AdjD) are highly prevalent among military personnel, often presenting diagnostic challenges due to overlapping symptoms and reliance on self-reporting. The amygdala, particularly the basolateral complex involved in fear-related memory formation and extinction recall, plays a crucial role in emotional processing. Abnormalities in these amygdala nuclei are implicated in PTSD and may distinguish it from other disorders like MDD and AdjD, where these mechanisms are less central.
