van der Waals functionals have recently been applied to obtain a potential energy surface to describe the dissociation of H2 on Ru(0001), where an improvement was found for computed reaction probabilities compared to experiment, which could not be achieved with the use of other exchange-correlation functionals. It is, however, not yet clear to what extent van der Waals functionals give a better description of other molecule-metal surface systems. In this study, the optPBE-vdW-DF functional is compared to the SRP48 functional, which was originally fitted to describe the dissociation of H2 on Cu(111), in terms of the resulting potential energy surfaces and results of quasi-classical dynamics calculations and their agreement with experiment for different H2-metal surface systems. It is found that overall the optPBE-vdW-DF functional yields potential energy surfaces that are very similar to potential energy surfaces computed with the SRP48 functional. In dynamics calculations the optPBE-vdW-DF functional gives a slightly better description of molecular beam experiments. Also a different dependence of reaction on the rotational quantum number J is found, which is in better agreement with experimental data for H2 dissociation on Cu(111). The vibrational efficacy is found to be relatively insensitive to which of the two functionals is chosen.

Dealing with radioactive waste, particularly from various industrial processes, poses significant challenges. This paper explores the use of lithium aluminate borate (Li-Al-B) glass matrix as an alternative method for immobilizing radioactive waste, focusing specifically on waste generated in tin smelting industries, known as tin slag. The study primarily concentrates on transforming tin slag, a byproduct abundant in Natural Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), into a stable and safe form for disposal.

Construction of tetrahedral mesh phantom for Chinese women of childbearing age.

Although the Boundary Representation (BREP) method creates detailed surface phantoms of Chinese women of childbearing age, these phantoms cannot be directly used in Monte Carlo simulations. They must first be converted into voxel phantoms, a process that may diminish some of the inherent advantages of the surface phantoms. Therefore, the aim of this study is to construct a tetrahedral mesh (TM) phantom of Chinese women of childbearing age based on the BREP phantom, incorporating micron-level structural refinements to certain organ tissues while maintaining the original model's structure.

Prediction of hip fracture by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography in older Swedish women.

The socioeconomic burden of hip fractures, the most severe osteoporotic fracture outcome, is increasing and the current clinical risk assessment lacks sensitivity. This study aimed to develop a method for improved prediction of hip fracture by incorporating measurements of bone microstructure and composition derived from high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT). In a prospective cohort study of 3028 community-dwelling women aged 75 to 80, all participants answered questionnaires and underwent baseline examinations of anthropometrics and bone by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and HR-pQCT.

Artificial neurons with bio-inspired firing patterns have the potential to significantly improve the performance of neural network computing. The most significant component of an artificial neuron circuit is a large amount of energy consumption. Recent literature has proposed memristors as a promising option for synaptic implementation.

Lithium (Li) metal's extremely high specific energy and low potential make it critical for high-performance batteries. However, uncontrolled dendrite growth and an unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) during repeated cycling still seriously hinder its practical application in Li metal batteries. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and effective approach to fabricate a flexible and robust hybrid SEI layer using two kinds of organo-polysulfides with different sulfur chain lengths [bis(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)disulfide (Si-O-2S) and bis(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)tetrasulfide (Si-O-4S)] as the additives in the electrolyte.
