Sounding the field: recent works in sound studies.

Published: September 2015

For sound studies, the publication of a 593-page handbook, not to mention the establishment of at least one society - the European Sound Studies Association - might seem to signify the emergence of a new academic discipline. Certainly, the books under consideration here, alongside many others, testify to an intensification of concern with the aural dimensions of culture. Some of this work comes from HPS and STS, some from musicology and cultural studies. But all of it should concern members of our disciplines, as it represents a long-overdue foregrounding of the aural in how we think about the intersections of science, technology and culture.

Background And Objective: One of the functions attributed to the auditory efferent system is related to the processing of acoustic stimuli in noise backgrounds. However, clinical implications and the neurophysiological mechanisms of this system are not yet understood, especially on higher regions of the central nervous system. Only a few researchers studied the effects of noise on cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP), but the lack of studies in this area and the contradictory results, especially in children, point to the need to investigate different protocols and parameters that could allow the study of top-down activity in humans.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the association between Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Tinnitus using NHANES data from 2005 to 2020.

Methods: This study analyzed data from NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys) conducted between 2005 and 2020, and included 4871 participants aged 16 or older. OSA was assessed using the Multivariate Apnea Prediction Index and the variables from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

This paper critically examines the scientific and ethical underpinnings of gender-affirming care, particularly for minors. While major medical organizations endorse such interventions as medically necessary, the evidence supporting their long-term safety and efficacy remains limited. Research into hormonal, neuroanatomic, and genetic influences reveals a strong biological basis for gender identity, challenging social constructionist arguments.

BACKGROUND The Carhart effect consists of a reduction in bone conduction thresholds associated with conductive hearing loss. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of the Carhart effect in predicting outcomes from surgery in 3 age groups. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study included 532 patients with conductive hearing loss due to otosclerosis, otitis media with effusion, and chronic otitis media who underwent surgery between 2010 and 2020.

In everyday hearing, listeners face the challenge of understanding behaviorally relevant foreground stimuli (speech, vocalizations) in complex backgrounds (environmental, mechanical noise). Prior studies have shown that high-order areas of human auditory cortex (AC) pre-attentively form an enhanced representation of foreground stimuli in the presence of background noise. This enhancement requires identifying and grouping the features that comprise the background so they can be removed from the foreground representation.
