Background/aim: Considering the suspected link between mucinous neoplasm (MN) and pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), one option could be to propose prophylactic hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to selected patients in order to prevent the occurrence of PMP. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for developing PMP after curative surgery for a MN of the appendix.

Patients And Methods: All consecutive patients referred to our single tertiary care cancer center between September 1992 and March 2014 for MN of the appendix, initially without PMP, were retrospectively studied. Patients who had received prophylactic intraperitoneal treatment were excluded from the analysis.

Results: Twenty-five patients with a median age of 51 (range=25-74) years were identified. At the initial appendectomy, 19 (76%) patients had a perforated MN. Nine of these patients (40%) exhibited disseminated-free acellular intraperitoneal mucin without PMP. Six (24%) patients had an unperforated MN without free intraperitoneal mucin. After a median follow-up of 50 months, 12 (52%) patients had developed PMP after a median time of 61 (range=13-121) months. Complete cytoreductive surgery plus HIPEC was possible in only seven (64%) out of these 12 patients. No factor reached statistical significance in predicting the occurrence of PMP but a trend was found in the case of perforated MN (p=0.068), associated with a 65% recurrence rate, compared to 17% without perforation.

Conclusion: An appendicular MN cannot be considered a benign occurrence because PMP is common after resection and can occur up to 10 years after the initial appendectomy. Patients should be systematically followed up to detect PMP as early as possible. Patients with a perforated MN could be at higher risk of developing PMP.

Setting up a global SARS-CoV-2 surveillance system requires an understanding of how virus isolation and propagation practices, use of animal or human sera, and different neutralisation assay platforms influence assessment of SARS-CoV-2 antigenicity. In this study, with the contribution of 15 independent laboratories across all WHO regions, we carried out a controlled analysis of neutralisation assay platforms using the first WHO International Standard for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (source: NIBSC). Live virus isolates (source: WHO BioHub or individual labs) or spike plasmids (individual labs) for pseudovirus production were used to perform neutralisation assays using the same serum panels.

Introduction: Kidney replacement therapy (KRT) by dialysis or kidney transplantation represents the main treatment modalities for patients with kidney failure. Here we evaluate the trends in taking care of such patients in North Macedonia from 2015 through 2020.

Methods: The patients were analyzed according to age, sex, primary disease, and treatment modality.

Background: PMP is a rare clinical syndrome characterized by the accumulation of mucinous material in the peritoneal cavity. The combination of CRS and HIPEC is the standard treatment, known to improve survival outcomes. However, follow-up adherence is critical for early detection of recurrence and extending survival.

Article Synopsis
  • Standard treatment for resectable peritoneal metastases (PM) involves cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), but recurrence rates are high, prompting consideration for repeat procedures in some patients.
  • A study analyzed 132 repeat CRS/HIPEC surgeries between 1994 and 2024, finding that most patients had multiple procedures with similar complications and recovery times, and no 90-day postoperative mortality was recorded.
  • Results indicated that while overall survival and recurrence-free survival varied, the procedure offers comparable outcomes for both initial and repeat surgeries, with improved survival observed, particularly for patients with peritoneal pseudomyxoma (

There is a decreasing HIV care workforce in the United States, whereas the need for HIV care and prevention continues to increase. To better understand this issue, a quantitative, anonymous, one-time, self-administered survey was conducted. The survey was completed by 1,004 prescribing clinicians currently providing HIV-related health care.
