Post-assembly modification (PAM) is a powerful tool for the modular functionalization of self-assembled structures. We report a new family of tetrazine-edged Fe(II)4L6 tetrahedral cages, prepared using different aniline subcomponents, which undergo rapid and efficient PAM by inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reactions. Remarkably, the electron-donating or -withdrawing ability of the para-substituent on the aniline moiety influences the IEDDA reactivity of the tetrazine ring 11 bonds away. This effect manifests as a linear free energy relationship, quantified using the Hammett equation, between σ(para) and the rate of the IEDDA reaction. The rate of PAM can thus be adjusted by varying the aniline subcomponent.

A key feature of coordination cages is the dynamic nature of their coordinative bonds, which facilitates the synthesis of complex polyhedral structures and their post-assembly modification. However, this dynamic nature can limit cage stability. Increasing cage robustness is important for real-world use cases.

The assembly of metal-organic cages is governed by metal ion coordination preferences and the geometries of the typically rigid and planar precursor ligands. PdL cages are among the most structurally diverse, with subtle differences in the metal-ligand coordination vectors resulting in drastically different assemblies, however almost all rely on rigid aromatic linkers to avoid the formation of intractable mixtures. Here we exploit the inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction between tetrazine linker groups and alkene reagents to trigger structural changes induced by post-assembly modification.

The isoguanosine self-assembled pentamer (isoG-star) has exhibited remarkable selectivity for Cs binding over competing alkali and alkali earth metal cation, rendering it a promising extractor for radioactive waste Cs separation. However, to make isoG-star a pracrtical material for Cs isolation, the development of recyclable isoG-star material is required. In this study, a systematic screening of functional isoG derivatives was performed.

Protein cages that readily encapsulate active enzymes of interest present useful nanotools for delivery and catalysis, wherein those with programmable disassembly characteristics serve as particularly attractive platforms. Here, a general guest packaging system based on an artificial protein cage, TRAP-cage, the disassembly of which can be induced by the addition of reducing agents, is established. In this system, TRAP-cage with SpyCatcher moieties in the lumen is prepared using genetic modification of the protein building block and assembled into a cage structure with either monovalent gold ions or molecular crosslinkers.

Hierarchical self-assembly has been recently employed in the construction of anion-coordination-driven gel materials. However, the post-assembly modification strategy, which may be a highly efficient strategy to realize the functionalization of discrete 'aniono' supramolecular architectures, has not been employed yet. Herein we report the first example of anion-coordination-driven gel material cross-linked by well-defined 'aniono' triple helicate through post-assembly polymerization.
