Phytoplankton viruses are important components of aquatic ecosystems. However, their prevalence and genetic diversity in marine and freshwater systems are largely under estimated owing to the immense size of water bodies and limitations in virus discovery techniques. In this study, we conducted a 1-year survey of phytoplankton virus communities by collecting surface water monthly from an inland lake (East Lake) in China between May 2012 and April 2013. We examined four phytoplankton viruses, i.e., myoviruses, podoviruses, siphoviruses, and phycodnaviruses, and seven sets of primers were used to target conserved genes within these four species. In this year-long investigation, a total of 358 different virus-related sequences from four virus families were obtained. All virus families were detected in all months, except for cyanopodoviruses, which were only identified during eight of the 12 months surveyed. Moreover, virus abundance and diversity changed dynamically over time. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the majority of viral sequences from East Lake, China displayed distinct clustering patterns compared with published sequences. These results supported the existence of a highly diverse and unique phytoplankton virus community in East Lake, China.

Protected areas are refugia for wildlife and play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, especially in the restoration of rare and endangered species. However, little attention has been paid to the long-term contribution of protected areas to rare species population rejuvenation. To identify the population growth of milu deer (Elaphurus davidianus)in protected areas and unprotected areas, we fitted the population dynamics curve of reintroduced free-ranging and wild populations based on long-term monitoring data in four protected areas: Jiangsu Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve, Hubei Shishou Milu National Nature Reserve, Hunan East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve, and Jiangxi Poyang Lake area.

The Yangtze River-Dongting Lake link has gotten a lot of attention as a because of the Three Gorges Project. However, the hydrological dynamic process and future direction of the river-lake interaction in the context of sediment reduction are yet unknown. Based on Dongting Lake Basin runoff and sediment data from 1961 to 2020, as well as field monitoring data of turbidity and flow velocity from Yichang to Chenglingji section of the Yangtze River, this paper examines the runoff and sediment variation law and hydrological dynamic process of Chenglingji, the only outlet connecting Dongting Lake to the Yangtze River, and reveals the development trend of the river-lake relationship.

Lake Victoria is a well-known hot spot for intestinal schistosomiasis, caused by infection with the trematode Schistosoma mansoni. The snail intermediate hosts of this parasite are Biomphalaria snails, with Biomphalaria choanomphala being the predominant intermediate host within Lake Victoria. The prevalence of S.

Water and ion transport in nanochannels is crucial for membrane-based technology in biological systems. 2D materials, especially graphene oxide (GO), the most frequently used as the starting material, are ideal building blocks for developing synthetic membranes. However, the selective exclusion of small ions while maintaining in a pressured filtration process remains a challenge for GO membranes.

A novel Pickering interfacial biocatalysis (PIB) system has been, for the first time, successfully applied for the enzymatic selective hydrolysis of algae oils and fish oils to enrich n-3 PUFAs glycerides. Lipase AY 400SD was identified and adsorbed on hydrophobic hollow core-shell silica nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of the immobilized enzyme AY 400SD@HMSS-C. The biocatalyst was employed as an emulsifier to stabilize the water-in-oil Pickering emulsion, resulting in the successful construction of the PIB system.
