We have investigated the epoxidation of ethylene heterogeneously catalyzed by small gold nanoclusters based on density functional theory calculations. A promising trimolecular Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism via co-adsorbed ethylene- and CO-assisted reaction is addressed which provides significant insights into the fundamental catalytic mechanism for ethylene oxidation on small Au nanoclusters. O2 activation is found to be a key step for accelerating ethylene oxidation. Especially, the coadsorbed neighboring CO is found to be more robust for promoting the activation of the O-O bond, resulting in the formation of epoxide and CO2 due to the barrierless process. The new CO-promoted oxidation mechanism has also been clarified by the ab initio MD simulations.

Direct preparation of silver nanoclusters is of great significance for their applications. In this work, by selecting sodium cyanoborohydride as a weak reducing agent to control the kinetics of the reduction reaction, we successfully prepared silver nanoclusters protected by thiol-containing ligands, including mercaptosuccinic acid, cysteine, and glutathione. Based on the silver nanoclusters protected by mercaptosuccinic acid, silver-gold alloy nanoclusters were obtained through a gold doping reaction.

Triangular Au and tetrahedral Au are key structural units in the face-centered cubic gold core of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters. Understanding their stacking arrangements is essential for elucidating the growth mechanisms of these gold cores. In this study, we design two new isomers of Au(SR) nanoclusters via deliberately adjusting the stacking pattern of Au and Au based on the grand unified model and ring model to show preferable packing arrangements.
