βadrenoceptors agonists and phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors are effective bronchodilators, due to their ability to increase intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels and induce airway smooth muscle (ASM) relaxation. We have shown that increment of intracellular cAMP induced by β-adrenoceptors agonist fenoterol is followed by efflux of cAMP, which is converted by ecto-PDE and ecto-5'-nucleotidases (ecto-5'NT) to adenosine, leading to ASM contraction. Here we evaluate whether other classical bronchodilators used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) could induce cAMP efflux and, as consequence, influence the ASM contractility.

Xiyanping injection (XYP), a type of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is widely used and often applied in combination with other medications in treating bronchitis, tonsillitis, and bacillary dysentery in China. In recent years, an elevated risk of allergic reactions has been observed following XYP, but whether concomitant medication use contributes to this risk is still unknown. This study aims to investigate the association between the concomitant use of XYP and the 25 most frequently co-applied medications with suspected allergic reactions for China's patients receiving XYP.

Bronchodilator aminophylline may induce atrial or less often ventricular arrhythmias. The mechanism of this proarrhythmic side effect has not been fully explained. Modifications of inward rectifier potassium (Kir) currents including I are known to play an important role in arrhythmogenesis; however, no data on the aminophylline effect on these currents have been published.

Progesterone (P4) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) are regarded as pro-quiescent factors that suppress uterine contractions during pregnancy. We previously used human primary cells in vitro and mice in vivo to demonstrate that simultaneously enhancing myometrial P4 and cAMP levels may reduce inflammation-associated preterm labor. Here, we assessed whether aminophylline (Ami; phosphodiesterase inhibitor) and P4 can reduce myometrial contractility and contraction-associated proteins (CAPs) better together than individually; both agents are clinically used drugs.
