Documenting Laboratory Procedures with Video.

J Undergrad Neurosci Educ

Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322.

Published: August 2015

Demonstrating laboratory procedures in person during class time can be time-consuming. When procedures are done under a microscope, live demonstration is also impractical because of the limited number of students who can view the demonstration at once. Creating videos beforehand, which students can watch before class and review during lab sessions, solves both of these problems. This article suggests ways to make and distribute high quality video of microscopic procedures.

Charcoal rot of soybean caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Mp) is a major disease of economic significance around the world. The objective of this test is to evaluate and identify new method(s) that can identify resistant and susceptible genotypes when inoculated with the fungus that causes charcoal rot in non-field environments. Four independent experiments were performed to determine the variability in disease severity when soybean genotypes are inoculated with isolates up to a total of 100 different variants of the charcoal rot fungus in laboratory, greenhouse, and growth chamber tests.

Type 1 plasminogen deficiency (PLGD), an ultra-rare disorder caused by PLG pathogenic variants, results in decreased levels of immunoreactive and functional plasminogen. PLGD can cause fibrin-rich pseudomembranes on mucosa that impair tissue/organ function, impact quality of life, and are potentially life-threatening. Lesion regression/resolution is facilitated by intravenous administration of human plasma-derived Glu-plasminogen (IV PLG concentrate), the first and only FDA-approved specific treatment, licensed in 2021.

No changes in plasma Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) levels in Treatment-Resistant Depression patients submitted to Convulsive Therapies.

Braz J Psychiatry

Service of Interdisciplinary Neuromodulation, Laboratory of Neurosciences (LIM-27), Instituto de Psiquiatria, Hospital das Clínicas, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil. Service of Electroconvulsive Therapy, Instituto de Psiquiatria, Hospital das Clínicas, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Background: Convulsive therapies are often effective for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD), although their mechanisms of action are unclear. Increases in Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) levels are observed after Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), but more recent evidence calls this claim into question. Moreover, Magnetic Seizure Therapy (MST), a new convulsive technique, has not yet been studied regarding possible neurotrophic modulation.

Objective: To assess the fracture resistance of maxillary premolars with mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) Class II cavities restored with lab composite and microhybrid resin composite, with or without a short fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) base.

Methods: Fifty sound maxillary premolars were divided randomly into 5 groups (n = 10); G1: Intact teeth (negative control), G2: Unrestored MOD cavities (positive control), G3: MOD inlay cavities restored with indirect lab composite, G4: MOD cavities restored with an SFRC base and microhybrid composite, and G5: MOD cavities restored with microhybrid composite. All specimens were thermocycled for 5000 cycles, then subjected to an axial static compressive load until fracture occurred.

Background: Magnetic resonance-guided adaptive radiation therapy (MRgART) systems combine Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology with linear accelerators (LINAC) to enhance the precision and efficacy of cancer treatment. These systems enable real-time adjustments of treatment plans based on the latest patient anatomy, creating an urgent need for accurate and rapid dose calculation algorithms. Traditional CT-based dose calculations and ray-tracing (RT) processes are time-consuming and may not be feasible for the online adaptive workflow required in MRgART.
