Hypertrichosis refers to excessive hair growth that is independent of any androgen effect. Hypertrichosis could be congenital or acquired, localised or generalised. The phenomenon of acquired localised hypertrichosis following cast application for a fracture is well known to orthopaedic surgeons, but is rarely encountered by primary care physicians. We describe a 28-month-old Chinese boy who had fracture of right leg as a result of an injury. He had a cast applied by an orthopaedic surgeon as treatment. On removal of the cast 6 weeks later, he was noticed to have significant hair growth on his right leg compared with the left leg. The patient was reassessed 3 months after removal of the cast. The hypertrichosis resolved completely with time. This patient was one of the youngest among the reported cases of acquired localised hypertrichosis after cast application. We illustrate the significance of management of post-cast-acquired localised hypertrichosis in the primary care setting.

An automatic cervical cell classification model based on improved DenseNet121.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Biomedical Engineering, School of Life Science and Technology, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun, 130022, China.

The cervical cell classification technique can determine the degree of cellular abnormality and pathological condition, which can help doctors to detect the risk of cervical cancer at an early stage and improve the cure and survival rates of cervical cancer patients. Addressing the issue of low accuracy in cervical cell classification, a deep convolutional neural network A2SDNet121 is proposed. A2SDNet121 takes DenseNet121 as the backbone network.

The efficient acquisition and processing of large-scale terrain data has always been a focal point in the field of photogrammetry. Particularly in complex mountainous regions characterized by clouds, terrain, and airspace environments, the window for data collection is extremely limited. This paper investigates the use of airborne millimeter-wave InSAR systems for efficient terrain mapping under such challenging conditions.

Virtualized Microphone Array for Moving Sources Mapping.

The acoustic analysis of a moving object, such as in pass-by or fly-over tests, is a very important and demanding issue. These types of analyses make it possible to characterize the machine in quite realistic conditions, but the typical difficulties related to source localization and characterization are usually exacerbated by the need to take into consideration and to compensate for the object movement. In this paper, a technique based on acoustic beamforming is proposed, which is applicable to all those cases where the object under investigation is moving.

This study proposes a novel rolling bearing fault diagnosis technique based on a synchrosqueezing wavelet transform (SWT) and a transfer residual convolutional neural network (TRCNN) designed to address the difficulties of feature extraction caused by the non-stationarity of fault signals, as well as the issue of low fault diagnosis accuracy resulting from small sample quantities. This approach transforms the one-dimensional vibration signal into time-frequency diagrams using an SWT based on complex Morlet wavelet basis functions, which redistributes (squeezes) the values of the wavelet coefficients at different localized points in a time-frequency plane to the estimated instantaneous frequencies. This allows the energy to be more fully concentrated in actual corresponding frequency components.

: In Romania, breast cancer is the second most common cancer, the third leading cause of cancer death, and the most prevalent cancer overall. De novo advanced-stage breast cancer often presents in clinical practice, and treatment decisions are best made in a multidisciplinary tumor board (MTD) involving surgeons, radiotherapists, and medical oncologists. Significant advances in systemic therapies, particularly in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS), have surpassed traditional palliative mastectomy and radiotherapy for local control.
