Published: August 2015

This paper reviews the speciation and determination of mercury by various analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectrometry, voltammetry, inductively coupled plasma techniques, spectrophotometry, spectrofluorometry, high performance liquid chromatography, and gas chromatography. Approximately 126 research papers on the speciation and determination of mercury by various analytical techniques published in international journals since 2013 are reviewed.

Island habitats provide unique opportunities to study speciation. Recent work indicates that both ex situ origination and in situ speciation contribute to island species diversity. However, clear evidence of local adaptation of endemic plant species on islands requires in-depth studies, which are scarce.

An analytical quality by design-guided LC-ICP-MS method for simultaneous arsenic speciation analysis in HEK-293 cells was optimized and validated. Initially, critical method variables (CMVs) were identified to achieve the targeted critical quality attribute (CQA) of the analytical target profile (ATP). Based on knowledge and risk assessments, formic acid (X), citric acid (X), and pH (X) were studied for their effect on method responses such as resolutions (Y1, Y2) and retention time of As(V), As(III) and DMA (Y3, Y4, and Y5) using central composite design (CCD).

Automated, rapid electrocatalyst discovery techniques that comprehensively address the exploration of chemical spaces, characterization of catalyst robustness, reproducibility, and translation of results to (flow) electrolysis operation are needed. Responding to the growing interest in biomass valorization, we studied the glycerol electro-oxidation reaction (GEOR) on gold in alkaline media as a model reaction to demonstrate the efficacy of such methodology introduced here. Our platform combines individually addressable electrode arrays with HardPotato, a Python application programming interface for potentiostat control, to automate electrochemical experiments and data analysis operations.

Strain LCG007, isolated from Lu Chao Harbor's intertidal water, phylogenetically represents a novel genus within the family Rhodobacteraceae. Metabolically, it possesses a wide array of amino acid metabolic genes that enable it to thrive on both amino acids or peptides. Also, it could hydrolyze peptides containing D-amino acids, highlighting its potential role in the cycling of refractory organic matter.

Key Laboratory of Urban Environment and Health, Ningbo Observation and Research Station, Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xiamen, 361021, China.

Background: Huge phages (genome size ≥ 200 kb) have been detected in diverse habitats worldwide, infecting a variety of prokaryotes. However, their evolution and adaptation strategy in soils remain poorly understood due to the scarcity of soil-derived genomes.

Results: Here, we conduct a size-fractioned (< 0.
