A novel route for the production of renewable aromatic chemicals, particularly substituted phthalic acid anhydrides, is presented. The classical two-step approach to furanics-derived aromatics via Diels-Alder (DA) aromatization has been modified into a three-step procedure to address the general issue of the reversible nature of the intermediate DA addition step. The new sequence involves DA addition, followed by a mild hydrogenation step to obtain a stable oxanorbornane intermediate in high yield and purity. Subsequent one-pot, liquid-phase dehydration and dehydrogenation of the hydrogenated adduct using a physical mixture of acidic zeolites or resins in combination with metal on a carbon support then allows aromatization with yields as high as 84 % of total aromatics under relatively mild conditions. The mechanism of the final aromatization reaction step unexpectedly involves a lactone as primary intermediate.

Analysis of Plasticizer Contamination Throughout Olive Oil Production.

Molecules

December 2024

LAQV/REQUIMTE, Department of Chemistry, NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon, 2829-516 Caparica, Portugal.

This study monitored the contamination of 32 plasticizers in olive oil throughout the production and storage process. Samples were collected at different stages of production from three olive oil production lines in distinct regions of Portugal and analyzed for 23 phthalates and 9 phthalates substitutes to identify contamination sources. The developed analytical method employed liquid-liquid extraction with hexane/methanol (1:4, /), followed by centrifugation, extract removal, and freezing as a clean-up step.

Hafnium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Nanosystems Entrapping Squaraines for Efficient NIR-Responsive Photodynamic Therapy.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, NIS Interdepartmental and INSTM Reference Centre, University of Torino, Via G. Quarello 15/A, 10135 and Via P. Giuria 7, 10125 Turin, Italy.

In this study, we present for the first time the incorporation of two distinct nonsymmetrical squaraines (SQ) into hierarchically porous Hafnium-based UiO-66 Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), each functionalized with various moieties, for application as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy. SQs are meticulously designed to feature COOH moieties for interaction with the MOF's metallic cluster and bromine atoms to enhance intersystem crossing and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The distinct central functionalizations, one with squaric acid and the other with a dicyanovinyl-substituted squaric acid derivative, result in unique geometric conformations.

This study investigates the efficacy of newly synthesized inhibitor with a dual function of corrosion inhibition and biocide for control of microbial influenced corrosion (MIC) in carbon steel API 5LX in the cooling tower water (CTW) environment. Four types of N-substituted tetrabromophthalic inhibitor (N-TBI) were synthesized, and the structural characterization was performed via proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry. These studies revealed the distinctive optical, thermal, and dielectric properties of the synthesized inhibitors.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses California's Proposition 65, which aims to reduce consumer exposure to toxic chemicals by creating a list of harmful substances and discouraging businesses from using them.
  • The study evaluates national biomonitoring data to determine whether Prop 65 has successfully reduced exposure to these chemicals, focusing on changes in blood and urine concentrations among participants over time.
  • Results indicate that while the concentration of listed chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA) declined, some non-listed but related chemicals (like Bisphenol S) increased, suggesting businesses may be substituting one harmful chemical for another.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the link between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and urinary phthalate metabolites, considering the rise of phthalate substitutes and variations in diagnostic approaches.
  • - Analyzing data from 641 participants in the NHANES 2017-2018 database, researchers used three methods to diagnose NAFLD and assessed the concentration of various phthalate metabolites in urine.
  • - Significant correlations were found between NAFLD and certain phthalate metabolites through logistic regression analysis, emphasizing the need for precise diagnostics in understanding NAFLD's development.
