Self-assembly provides an information-economical route to the fabrication of objects at virtually all scales. However, there is no known algorithm to program self-assembly in macro-scale, solid, complex 3D objects. Here such an algorithm is described, which is inspired by the molecular assembly of DNA, and based on bricks designed by tetrahedral meshing of arbitrary objects. Assembly rules are encoded by topographic cues imprinted on brick faces while attraction between bricks is provided by embedded magnets. The bricks can then be mixed in a container and agitated, leading to properly assembled objects at high yields and zero errors. The system and its assembly dynamics were characterized by video and audio analysis, enabling the precise time- and space-resolved characterization of its performance and accuracy. Improved designs inspired by our system could lead to successful implementation of self-assembly at the macro-scale, allowing rapid, on-demand fabrication of objects without the need for assembly lines.

Ion beam induced secondary electron tomography of acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate/polycarbonate polymer blends for fused filament fabrication and injection moulding.

Polymer blending is an interesting strategy to broaden the combination of properties available for a variety of applications. To understand the behaviour of the new materials obtained as well as the influence of the fabrication parameters used, methods to analyse the distribution of polymers in the blend with resolution below the micrometer are required. In this work, we demonstrate the capability of focused ion beam (FIB) tomography to provide 3D information of the polymer distribution in objects obtained by blending acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA) with polycarbonate (PC) (50 wt%), fabricated by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and by Injection Moulding (IM).

A rendering technique is proposed for creating full-parallax, large-scale computer-generated holograms (CGHs) that can reconstruct a three-dimensional (3D) scene, including transparent objects. The proposed method enables us to simulate optical refraction based on wave optics without relying on Snell's law. Several techniques are also presented to apply the method to creating large-scale CGHs by reducing the computation time.

Observations of Cherenkov-Like Radial Wake in Water Waves.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Ocean Observation‑Imaging Testbed of Zhejiang Province, Ocean College, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, China.

Cherenkov radiation (CR) is a fascinating phenomenon that occurs not only in electromagnetic (EM) waves but also in water waves. The V-shaped wake formed by a moving object on the water surface results from the constructive interference of water waves of different wavelengths, similar to CR. We designed and fabricated a one-dimensional (1D) water wave crystal to analogize the behavior of moving particles in water waves.

A step towards understanding plastic complexity: Antimony speciation in consumer plastics and synthetic textiles revealed by XAS.

We identified the antimony species present in a wide variety of plastic samples by X ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Sb L-edge. The samples contained different concentrations of antimony (Sb), ranging from PET bottles in which Sb compounds are used as catalysts, with concentrations around 300 mg/kg, to electrical equipment in which the element is used as a flame retardant, with concentrations of several tens of thousands of mg/kg. Although the shape of the spectra at the L-edge is quite similar for all Sb reference materials, we were able to identify antimony glycolate or acetate in PET bottles, bound organic Sb in c-PET trays and senarmontite in electrical materials as the main Sb components.

This study investigates the effects of disintegrants sodium starch glycolate (SSG) and crospovidone (CP) on the printability, rheological properties, and disintegration time of agar and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)-based formulations designed for semi-solid extrusion. Printability was assessed by measuring the dimensional accuracy of manually extruded filaments. Rheological analysis was performed using oscillatory measurements.
