Old but Gold: Tracking the New Guise of Histone Deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) Enzyme as a Biomarker and Therapeutic Target in Rare Diseases.

J Med Chem

January 2020

Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Department of Excellence 2018-2022 , University of Siena, via Aldo Moro 2 , 53100 , Siena , Italy.

Epigenetic regulation orchestrates many cellular processes and greatly influences key disease mechanisms. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) enzymes play a crucial role either as biomarkers or therapeutic targets owing to their involvement in specific pathophysiological pathways. Beyond their well-characterized role as histone modifiers, HDACs also interact with several nonhistone substrates and their increased expression has been highlighted in specific diseases.

Random-dot stereopsis in microstrabismic children: stimulus size matters.

*OD, MSc †PhD Département de sciences biomédicales (MP), École d'optométrie, (MP, DdG), Département ophtalmologie (DS-A), Département de psychologie (DS-A), Université du Québec à Montréal, Québec, Canada; and Centre de recherche, CHU Sainte-Justine, Montréal, Québec, Canada (MP, DS-A).

Purpose: Although children with microstrabismus demonstrate stereoscopic abilities when assessed with clinical tests containing visible contours (local stereopsis), severe stereoscopic impairments are reported when using random-dot stereogram (RDS). This differential performance may be associated with the decreasing interocular correlation resulting from the central suppression present in the deviated eye, affecting global stereopsis to a greater extent.

Methods: To test this hypothesis, stereoscopic performance on tasks using contour/local (experiment 1), RDS depth (experiment 2), and RDS shape discrimination (experiment 3) was obtained in nine microstrabismic children and compared with that of control participants.

Age-related macular degeneration: beyond anti-angiogenesis.

Mol Vis

January 2014

The Vision Clinic, Circular Road, Kilkenny, Ireland ; Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, University of Liverpool, UK.

Recently, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapies for neovascular age-related macular degeneration have been developed. These agents, originally developed for their anti-angiogenic mechanism of action, probably also work through an anti-permeability effect in preventing or reducing the amount of leakage from submacular neovascular tissue. Other treatment modalities include laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy with verteporfin, and submacular surgery.
