We report in this article that aqueous dispersions of thermosensitive diblock copolymer brush-grafted 17 nm silica nanoparticles (hairy NPs) can undergo in situ, reversible sol-gel transitions in response to temperature changes. The brushes consisted of a thermosensitive poly(methoxydi(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (PDEGMMA) inner block and a charge-carrying, poly(DEGMMA-co-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium iodide) outer block, which were prepared by a one-pot, surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization and subsequent quaternization of tertiary amine moieties in the second block with iodomethane. Above a critical concentration, the aqueous dispersion of hairy NPs with an appropriate block copolymer composition exhibited a reversible transition from a free flowing liquid to a free standing hydrogel upon cooling from elevated temperatures, which was driven by the lower critical solution temperature transition of the thermosensitive inner block of hairy NPs as confirmed by dynamic light scattering study. At the same concentration of hairy NPs, the sol-gel transition temperature was higher when the highly hydrated, charged outer block was longer. The transition temperature decreased with decreasing the concentration of hairy NPs in the dispersion; reversible gelation was achieved with a concentration of hairy NPs in water as low as 5.5 wt%. Interestingly, the LCST transition of the inner thermosensitive PDEGMMA block disappeared and no sol-gel transition was observed in the studied temperature range when the charged outer block was sufficiently long.

We investigated the surface orthogonal patterning and bidirectional self-assembly of binary hairy nanoparticles (NPs) constructed by uniformly tethering a single NP with multiple V-shaped AB diblock copolymers using Brownian dynamics simulations in a poor solvent. At low concentration, the chain collapse and microphase separation of binary polymer brushes can lead to the patterning of the NP surface into A- and B-type orthogonal patches with various numbers of domains (valency), = 1-6, that adopt spherical, linear, triangular, tetrahedral, square pyramidal, and pentagonal pyramidal configurations. There is a linear relationship between the valency and the average ratio of NP diameter to the polymers' unperturbed root-mean-square end-to-end distance for the corresponding valency.

The migration of metal ions to the food matrix has been always a challenge in the production of active food packaging films. In this study, it was tried to evaluate the idea of using hairy cellulose nanocrystals (HCNs) in controlling the migration of Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) from polycaprolactone (PCL)-based films to the Tilapia fish. HCNs and the final films (integrated with various amounts of HCNs and AgNPs) were evaluated physicochemically and mechanically.

Nearly monodisperse nanoparticle (NP) spheres attached to a nonvolatile ionic liquid surface were tracked by scanning electron microscopy to obtain the tracer diffusion coefficient as a function of the areal fraction ϕ. The technique resolved both tracer (gold) and background (silica) particles for ∼1-2 min, highlighting their mechanisms of diffusion, which were strongly dependent on ϕ. Structure and dynamics at low and moderate ϕ paralleled those reported for larger colloidal spheres, showing an increase in order and a decrease in by over 4 orders of magnitude.

Recently, the significant improvements in polymer composites properties have been mainly attributed to the ability of filler nanoparticles (NPs) to self-assemble into highly anisotropic self-assembled structures. In this work, we investigate the self-assembly of core-shell NPs composed of a silica core grafted with polybutadiene (PB) chains, generating the so-called "hairy" NPs (HNPs), immersed in tetrahydrofuran solvent. While uncoated silica beads aggregate forming uniform compact structures, the presence of a PB shell affects the silica NPs organization to the point that by increasing the polymer density at the corona, they tend to self-assemble into linear chain-like structures.

Substrate accessibility is a key limiting factor for the efficiency of heterogeneous photoredox catalysis. Recently, a high photoactive surface area of conjugated microporous polymer nanoparticles (CMP NPs) has made them promising candidates for overcoming the mass transfer limitation to achieve high photocatalytic efficiency. However, this potential has not been realized due to limited dispersibility of CMP NPs in many solvents, particularly in water.
