We describe an inexpensive paper-based sensor for rapid detection of low concentrations (ppm) of hydrogen cyanide gas. A piece of filter paper pre-spotted with a dilute monocyanocobinamide [CN(HO)Cbi] solution was placed on the end of a bifurcated optical fiber and the reflectance spectrum of the CN(HO)Cbi was monitored during exposure to 1.0-10.0 ppm hydrogen cyanide gas. Formation of dicyanocobinamide yielded a peak at 583 nm with a simultaneous decrease in reflectance from 450-500 nm. Spectral changes were monitored as a function of time at several relative humidity values: 25, 50, and 85% relative humidity. With either cellulose or glass fiber papers, spectral changes occurred within 10 s of exposure to 5.0 ppm hydrogen cyanide gas (NIOSH recommended short-term exposure limit). We conclude that this sensor could provide a real-time end-of-service-life alert to a respirator user.

MarE, a heme-dependent enzyme, catalyzes a unique 2-oxindole-forming monooxygenation reaction from tryptophan metabolites. To elucidate its enzyme-substrate interaction mode, we present the first X-ray crystal structures of MarE in complex with its prime substrate, (2S,3S)-β-methyl-L-tryptophan and cyanide at 1.89 Å resolution as well as a truncated yet catalytically active version in complex with the substrate at 2.

Recent studies suggested intrathecal vasodilator administration as a therapy to mitigate post-ischemic cerebral hypoperfusion following cardiac arrest. We examined the effects of two commonly used intrathecal vasodilators, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and nicardipine, on cerebral pial microcirculation, cortical tissue oxygen tension (PctO2), and electrocortical activity in the early post-resuscitation period using a porcine model of cardiac arrest. Thirty pigs were resuscitated after 14 min of untreated cardiac arrest.

This study investigates the nature and interplay of noncovalent interactions (NCIs)─tetrel bonds (TB), hydrogen bonds (HB), and halogen bonds (XB)─in molecular assemblies formed between trifluorogermyl hypochlorite (FGeOCl) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Using a combination of high-level computational methods, we explored the geometric, energetic, and electronic properties of dimers, trimers, and tetramers formed in different molar ratios of interacting reagents. Various analyses reveal a significant cooperativity between TB and HB, which mutually reinforce each other, while XB interactions are diminished in the presence of TB and HB.

Laetrile is a semi-synthesis product of amygdalin, whereas amygdalin is a naturally occurring substance in many plants. Both compounds have a nitrile functional group that, when activated by the intestinal enzyme β-glucosidases, releases hydrogen cyanide.

Drought stress severely damages wheat growth and photosynthesis, and plants at the grain-filling stage are the most sensitive to drought throughout the entire period of development. Exogenous spraying of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) can alleviate the damage to wheat caused by drought stress, but the mechanism regulating the proline pathway remains unknown. Two wheat cultivars, drought-sensitive Zhoumai 18 and drought-tolerant Zhengmai 1860, were used as materials when the plants were cultivated to the grain-filling stage.
