Estimating the Cost-Saving Threshold of a Rural Syringe Services Program Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

AIDS Behav

January 2025

Department of Health, Behavior and Society , Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, 624 N. Broadway, Hampton House 184, Baltimore, MD, 21205, USA.

This study aimed to examine shifts in the cost-savings threshold of a rural syringe services program (SSP) that resulted in the 12-months following the identification of the COVID-19 pandemic. We compared SSP operational costs during the 12-months immediately before and after identification of the COVID-19 pandemic using administrative data from the Cabell-Huntington Harm Reduction Program (CHHRP), which is operated by the Cabell-Huntington Health Department in West Virginia. Data included monthly counts of client encounters, sterile syringe distribution, and HIV testing.

Geometric Study and Clinical Case Series for Mandible Reconstruction With a Single-Piece Scapular Free Flap.

Head Neck

January 2025

Division of Otolaryngology, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Background: Virtual surgical planning (VSP) with simple cutting templates could help surgeons preoperatively plan scapula reconstructions in the vertical and horizontal orientations.

Methods: Virtually, eight defects were created in ten healthy mandibles and reconstructed with the subject-specific scapula vertically and horizontally. In the clinical series, 15 single-piece scapula mandible reconstructions planned with in-house VSP and guided with simple templates were compared with 15 freehand reconstructions.

Tracing value from social determinant solutions.

Health Aff Sch

January 2025

Health Policy Center, Urban Institute, 2201 General Taylor Street, New Orleans, LA 70115, United States.

We develop and illustrate a framework to trace value from social determinants of health (SDOH) interventions across 4 dimensions: health, cost and quality, engagement, and equity. To provide context, we begin by estimating the societal value lost to premature deaths from homelessness and food insecurity, using recent longitudinal methods that offer greater precision. We then apply the value tracing framework to 2 example interventions: permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless people and medically tailored meals for dual eligibles.

Introduction: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is related to disproportionate unemployment and productivity burden in the USA. The current study describes real-world mental health (MH)-related disability days and costs of patients with TRD initiated on esketamine nasal spray or conventional therapies in the USA.

Methods: Adults with TRD were selected from Merative™ MarketScan Commercial database (from January 2016 to January 2023) and classified into four cohorts (esketamine, ECT [electroconvulsive therapy], TMS [transcranial magnetic stimulation], and SGA [second-generation antipsychotics] augmentation) based on therapy initiated (index date) on/after 5 March 2019 (esketamine approval date for TRD).
