Here we report on a new architecture for potentiometric NO2 sensors that features thin 8YSZ electrolytes sandwiched between two porous (La0.8Sr0.2)0.95MnO3 (LSM95) layers-one thick and the other thin-fabricated by the tape casting and co-firing techniques. Measurements of their sensing characteristics show that reducing the porosity of the supporting LSM95 reference electrodes can increase the response voltages. In the meanwhile, thin LSM95 layers perform better than Pt as the sensing electrode since the former can provide higher response voltages and better linear relationship between the sensitivities and the NO2 concentrations over 40-1000 ppm. The best linear coefficient can be as high as 0.99 with a sensitivity value of 52 mV/decade as obtained at 500 °C. Analysis of the sensing mechanism suggests that the gas phase reactions within the porous LSM95 layers are critically important in determining the response voltages.

In every heartbeat, cardiac muscle cells perform excitation-Ca signaling-contraction (EC) coupling to pump blood against the vascular resistance. Cardiomyocytes can sense the mechanical load and activate mechano-chemo-transduction (MCT) mechanism, which provides feedback regulation of EC coupling. MCT feedback is important for the heart to upregulate contraction in response to increased load to maintain cardiac output.

Electrochromic materials were discovered in the 1960s when scientists observed reversible changes between the light and dark states in WO thin films under different voltages. Since then, researchers have identified various electrochromic material systems, including transition metal oxides, polymer materials, and small molecules. However, the electrochromic phenomenon has rarely been observed in non-metallic elemental substances.

The persistent Na current (I) is thought to play important roles in many brain regions including the generation of inspiration in the ventral respiratory column (VRC) of mammals. The characterization of the slow inactivation of I requires long-lasting voltage steps (>1 s), which will increase intracellular Na and activate the Na/K-ATPase pump current (I). Thus, I may contribute to the previously measured slow inactivation of I and the generation of the inspiratory bursting rhythm.

This study investigates the nonlinear dynamics of a system with frequency-dependent stiffness using a MEMS-based capacitive inertial sensor as a case study. The sensor is positioned directly on a rotating component of a machine and consists of a microbeam clamped at both ends by fixed supports with a fixed central proof mass. The nonlinear behavior is determined by electrostatic forces, axial and bending motion coupling, and frequency-dependent stiffness.

The process of micromachining has garnered attention for its ability to create three-dimensional tiny features, particularly in ultra-hard and exotic materials. The present work investigates the effect of different parameters of the µ-ED milling, such as pulse on time (Ton), pulse off time (Toff), voltage (V), and tool rotation (TR) on the dimensional deviation (DD), material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness (Ra), and machined surface characteristics (analysed by EDS and FESEM). The sesame oil as dielectric and tungsten-copper as tool electrodes were used to maintain the accuracy and improve the machinability of bio-grade Nitinol SMA.
