Background: Long-term fasting demonstrates greater therapeutic potential and broader application prospects in extreme environments than intermittent fasting.

Method: This pilot study of 10-day complete fasting (CF), with a small sample size of 13 volunteers, aimed to investigate the time-series impacts on gut microbiome, serum metabolome, and their interrelationships with biochemical indices.

Results: The results show CF significantly affected gut microbiota diversity, composition, and interspecies interactions, characterized by an expansion of the Proteobacteria phylum (about six-fold) and a decrease in Bacteroidetes (about 50%) and Firmicutes (about 34%) populations.

This study introduces a novel approach to enhance surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing using Kramers-Kronig (K-K) relations for phase extraction from reflection spectra. By applying the K-K relations, a phase shift sensitivity of 3400°/RIU is achieved improving SPR detection limits to 9 × 10 RIU, which is four times more sensitive than conventional methods for determining SPR peak shifts. This advancement enables more precise detection of refractive index changes in aqueous solutions, making it valuable for biosensing and environmental monitoring with spectrometers.

Combined Surface Flux Transport and Helioseismic Far-Side Active Region Model (FARM).

Sol Phys

November 2024

Max-Planck-Institut für Sonnensystemforschung, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 3, 37077 Göttingen, Germany.

Maps of the magnetic field at the Sun's surface are commonly used as boundary conditions in space-weather modeling. However, continuous observations are only available from the Earth-facing part of the Sun's surface. One commonly used approach to mitigate the lack of far-side information is to apply a surface flux transport (SFT) model to model the evolution of the magnetic field as the Sun rotates.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effects of a 21-day complete fasting period on healthy adults, analyzing physiological and biochemical changes, as well as metabolic adaptations.
  • Thirteen volunteers demonstrated significant weight loss, decreased blood glucose, increased blood ketones, and a decline in resting energy expenditure during the fasting phase, while most physiological indicators remained stable.
  • The findings suggest that prolonged fasting can be safely conducted under medical supervision, leading to metabolic adjustments without harming key bodily functions or organs, offering insights into health and survival strategies in extreme conditions.

An Analysis of Radiotherapy Machine Requirements in India: Impact of the Pandemic and Regional Disparities.

J Med Phys

September 2024

Centre for Cosmology, Astrophysics and Space Science, GLA University, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Aim: This article examines India's present radiotherapy (RT) machine status and requirements, geographical distribution, and infrastructure need in six regional areas, which include 31 member states and union territories (UTs). It also considers the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on India's teletherapy sector.

Materials And Methods: Data from reliable resources, including Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Global Cancer Observatory, and Directory of Radiotherapy Centres databases, were used to analyze the current status of RT machine (RTM) density, regional disparity, and COVID-19 impact on infrastructure growth-rate.
