Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether instability of knee is a risk factor in the progression of osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: Twenty-four mature New Zealand White rabbits were randomly divided into four groups. The control group received 0.3 ml saline in the first, fourth and seventh days in the right knee, while the other three groups received the same dosage 4 % papain and its activator 0.03 M L-cystein. The P3w group knees were harvested at three weeks after the last papain injection, the P6w group knees received a sham surgery at three weeks and were harvested at six weeks after the last papain injection, while the P+ACLT group knees received ACL transection at three weeks and were harvested at six weeks after the last papain injection. Cartilage degradation of femoral condyles and tibial plateaus were evaluated by X-rays, macroscopy, light microscopic and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Results: According to X-rays grade scale, macroscopic grade scale, light microscopic modified Mankin scale and TEM, in the P3w knees, cartilage degeneration of femoral condyles and tibial plateaus were significantly severe compared to those of the control group (P < 0.05), but the differences were not apparent in comparison with the P6w knees (P > 0.05). However, in P+ACLT knees, cartilage degeneration of femoral condyles and tibial plateaus appeared more severe in comparison with P6w knees, and the difference was significant (P < 0.05).

Conclusions: Instability of knee plays a significant role in increasing the severity of cartilage degradation in rabbit knees and should be considered as a risk factor in OA knee progression. Our data may suggest that reconstruction of knee stability may prevent or delay the progression of OA.

Wearable robots are often powered by elastic actuators, which can mimic the intrinsic compliance observed in human joints, contributing to safe and seamless interaction. However, due to their increased complexity, when compared to direct drives, elastic actuators are susceptible to faults, which pose significant challenges, potentially compromising user experience and safety during interaction. In this article, we developed a fault-tolerant control strategy for torque assistance in a knee exoskeleton and investigated user experience during a walking task while emulating faults.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of perioperative testosterone supplementation on orthopedic surgical outcomes.

Methods: Three online databases were searched from database inception until September 2024. Three reviewers independently screened all titles, abstracts, and full-texts of articles investigating perioperative testosterone use in orthopedic surgery.

Background: Female soccer athletes with a history of anterior cruciate ligament injury are more susceptible to secondary injuries and potentially worse sport performance. The purpose of this study was to determine if female soccer athletes post anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction demonstrate worse jump height and reactive strength index performance and lower involved limb hip, knee, and ankle joint power and absorption, and larger joint power and absorption asymmetries compared to matched uninjured athletes.

Methods: Eleven Division I female soccer athletes post anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (18.

Background: People with patellofemoral pain (PFP) may have bilateral deficits in hop for distance test (SLHD) performance, whereas the worsening performance of the pain-free or less painful limbs suggests that bilateral movement differences may occur. While clinicians may not be aware of bilateral movement differences that may be employed during the clinical assessment of SLHD performance (e.g.

The risks and benefits associated with simultaneous bilateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) continue to engender contentious debate. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of simultaneous bilateral and unilateral UKA. A retrospective review was performed between 2019 and 2022 on 280 patients (130 simultaneous bilateral vs.
