A novel multichannel carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format conversion scheme based on a single custom-designed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with comb spectra is proposed. The spectral response of each channel is designed according to the algebraic difference between the CSRZ and NRZ spectra outlines. The tailored group delays are introduced to minimize the maximum refractive index modulation. Numerical results show that four-channel 200-GHz-spaced CSRZ signals at 40 Gbits/s can be converted into NRZ signals with high Q-factor and wide-range robustness. It is shown that our proposed FBG is robust to deviations of bandwidth and central wavelength detuning. Another important merit of this scheme is that the pattern effects are efficiently reduced owing to the well-designed spectra response.

We propose what we believe is a novel format conversion scheme using a few-mode fiber Bragg grating (FM-FBG) that can perform multichannel format conversion from carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) for both LP and LP. The multichannel spectral response of FM-FBG is designed according to the algebraic difference between the CSRZ and NRZ spectra outlines. Additionally, the FM-FBG response spectra of LP are designed to shift with that of LP by the WDM-MDM channel spacing for filtering both modes together.

In this paper, a photonic scheme to generate a frequency-quadrupled microwave signal with full-range 360° tunable phase shift is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Pure ±2nd-order sidebands with the carrier suppressed are generated by a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator. The two sidebands are separated by a fiber Bragg grating with the polarization state of one sideband rotated by 90 deg via a Faraday rotating mirror and then recombined to obtain a pair of orthogonally polarized wavelengths.

We propose and demonstrate a scheme for optical ultrawideband (UWB) pulse generation by exploiting a half-carrier-suppressed Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a delay-interferometer- and wavelength-division-multiplexer-based, reconfigurable and multi-channel differentiator (DWRMD). Multi-wavelength, polarity- and shape-switchable UWB pulses of monocycle, doublet, triplet, and quadruplet are experimentally generated simply by tuning two bias voltages to modify the carrier-suppression ratio of MZM and the differential order of DWRMD respectively. The pulse position modulation, pulse shape modulation, pulse amplitude modulation and binary phase-shift keying modulation of UWB pulses can also be conveniently realized with the same scheme structure, which indicates that the hybrid modulation of those four formats can be achieved.

We proposed and demonstrate an all-optical demodulation and format conversion scheme for multi-channel (carrier suppressed) return-to-zero differential phase shift keying ((CS)RZ-DPSK) signals. By utilizing a single delay interferometer (DI) with half bit delay, multi-channel (CS)RZ-DPSK signals can be demodulated simultaneously at the destructive port of the DI, with the corresponding converted nonreturn-to-zero differential phase shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) signals obtained at the constructive port. The proposed multi-channel operation has been demonstrated for 6*20 Gb/s RZ-DPSK and 6*40 Gb/s CSRZ-DPSK signals, with ~0.
