Enriching fluorotelomer carboxylic acids-degrading consortia from sludges and soils.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ, United States. Electronic address:

Fluorotelomer carboxylic acids (FTCAs) has drawn increasing attention due to their prevalent occurrence, high toxicity, and bioaccumulating effects. In this study, microbial consortia with sustainable FTCA removal abilities were enriched and characterized from two activated sludges and five soils when no external carbon sources were supplemented. After four generations of enrichment, stable 6:2 FTCA and 5:3 FTCA biodegradation were achieved, reaching 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Scrub titi is a native shrub in central Florida with potential landscaping uses due to its attractive features, but it faces disease issues as observed in a nursery in Tennessee.
  • Symptoms such as black leaf lesions and brown stem lesions were identified, with a disease severity of 25% and incidence of 10% in the studied plant population.
  • Bacterial analysis revealed a gram-negative strain with sequences closely related to a known species, suggesting it may be a new species pending further classification.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is an important commercial crop that has been widely cultivated in China for more than 2500 years. One variety, Tongling white ginger, has been grown in the Yi'an District of Tongling city, Anhui province (30°45 N, 117°43 E), China. In August 2022, symptoms of yellowing and wilting were observed on ginger plants, with a disease incidence rate exceeding 20% in the field.

Article Synopsis
  • Nitrofurans, specifically nitrofurantoin (NFT) and furaltadone (FTD), are antibiotics used widely in both veterinary and human medicine, and this study examines their long-term effects on specific bacterial strains from wastewater.
  • The research utilized various methods like genome sequencing and metabolomics to analyze changes in these bacterial strains after being exposed to nitrofurans for 12 months, revealing significant impacts on amino acid and sugar metabolism, as well as protein synthesis.
  • The findings highlight the potential environmental risks of prolonged nitrofuran presence, including mutagenic effects, increased oxidative stress, and notable changes in metabolic activity across different bacterial strains.

species are emerging pathogens in cystic fibrosis with inherent resistance to several classes of antimicrobial agents. We exposed strains with wild-type antimicrobial susceptibility to ticarcillin and generated mutants with broad β-lactam resistance. Within the detection limit of the assay, the capability to develop mutational resistance was strain-specific and reproducible.
