[Ashy dermatosis].

Vestn Dermatol Venerol

Published: March 1990

Five patients with ashy dermatitis are described, aged 6 to 14, one boy and four girls. The process is characterized by dirty grayish or ash-gray-colored maculae on the skin of the trunk and limbs. These maculae do not tend to fuse, nor exfoliate; they are not associated with any subjective sensations. Thorough examinations have not revealed any osteomuscular or visceral abnormalities. The disease runs a benign course, and only the cosmetic defect worries the patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - Pigmentary disorders like Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) and vitiligo can lead to significant cosmetic concerns and psychosocial stress for patients.
  • - A 61-year-old man with LPP developed vitiligo and was successfully treated with low-dose isotretinoin and topical tacrolimus ointment.
  • - The coexistence of LPP and vitiligo might be explained by an autoimmune process affecting skin pigmentation called melanocytorrhagy.

Article Synopsis
  • * A review of existing literature found a lack of systematic studies on how these conditions impact patients' quality of life (QOL), with only seven studies meeting criteria to highlight impairment in QOL due to ADMH.
  • * Overall, the studies suggest that ADMH significantly affects QOL, potentially more so than melasma and similar to or less than vitiligo, emphasizing the need for clinicians to consider the psychosocial aspects when managing patients with these conditions.

Introduction: Cutaneous adverse reactions to epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRi) are some of the most common side effects that patients experience. However, cutaneous adverse reactions that cause dyspigmentation in patients have been rarely reported. Erythema dyschromicum perstans (EDP) is a rare pigmentary condition that causes ashy-grey hyperpigmented macules and patches, with a few cases reported from EGFRi in the literature.

Article Synopsis
  • Ashy dermatosis, also known as erythema dyschromicum perstans, is marked by grey patches appearing on the skin, and its exact cause is still unknown.
  • A case study of a two-year-old child suggests that the condition may have developed due to an infection, with the skin improving naturally over two years without treatment.
  • This case is notably the second instance of ashy dermatosis reported in children under three years old, highlighting the need for further research to identify why some cases resolve on their own while others do not.
