Clinical and Structural Parameters in Autosomal Dominant Optic Atrophy Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study Using Optical Coherence Tomography.

J Neuroophthalmol

November 2024

Ophthalmology Department (AC-C, MF-R, SA-A, RA, BS-D), Seu Maternitat, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain; Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (AC-C, SA-A, BS-D), Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain; Fundació Per La Recerca Biomèdica-IDIBAPS (MF-R, SA-A, BS-D), Barcelona, Spain; and Ophthalmology Department (MS-G), Consorci Mar Parc de Salut de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Background: Autosomal Dominant Optic Atrophy (ADOA) is a hereditary optic neuropathy characterized by retinal ganglion cell degeneration and optic nerve fiber loss. This study examined the correlation between clinical and structural parameters in patients with ADOA using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and explored potential clinical biomarkers.

Methods: A cross-sectional, case-control observational study included 27 patients with ADOA and 27 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

Epidemiological methods in transition: Minimizing biases in classical and digital approaches.

PLOS Digit Health

January 2025

Social Physics and Complexity (SPAC) Lab, LIP-Laboratory for Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics, Lisboa, Portugal.

Epidemiology and Public Health have increasingly relied on structured and unstructured data, collected inside and outside of typical health systems, to study, identify, and mitigate diseases at the population level. Focusing on infectious diseases, we review the state of Digital Epidemiology at the beginning of 2020 and how it changed after the COVID-19 pandemic, in both nature and breadth. We argue that Epidemiology's progressive use of data generated outside of clinical and public health systems creates several technical challenges, particularly in carrying specific biases that are almost impossible to correct for a priori.

Context: The two-dimensional graphene/MoTe heterostructure holds extensive potential applications in optoelectronic devices, sensors, and catalysts. To expand its optical applications, this study systematically investigates the adsorption stability of metal atoms (Au, Pt, Pd, and Fe) on the graphene/MoTe and their influence on its optoelectronic properties employing first-principles methods. The findings indicate that after the adsorption of Au and Pd, the structure retains its direct bandgap properties, while the adsorption of Pt and Fe exhibits indirect bandgap characteristics.

Avoiding positivity at a cost: Evidence of reward devaluation in the novel valence selection task.

J Exp Psychol Gen

January 2025

Department of Educational Psychology, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

Reward devaluation theory (RDT) posits that some depressed individuals may not only be biased toward negative material but also actively avoid positive material (i.e., devaluing reward).

It has been claimed that deliberately making errors while studying, even when the correct answers are provided, can enhance memory for the correct answers, a phenomenon termed the derring effect. Such deliberate erring has been shown to outperform other learning techniques, including copying and underlining, elaborative studying with concept mapping, and synonym generation. To date, however, the derring effect has only been demonstrated by a single group of researchers and in a single population of participants.
