Background: Testicular germ cell tumors are the most common solid malignancies in young men, with increasing incidence worldwide. Broadly classified into seminomas and non-seminomas, they exhibit distinct biological behaviors and responses to treatment. Although metabolic reprogramming is an acknowledged cancer hallmark, metabolic pathways in testicular germ cell tumors remain poorly understood.

Exploring the interplay between inflammation and male fertility.

FEBS J

December 2024

UMIB - Unit for Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine, ICBAS - School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto, Portugal.

Male fertility results from a complex interplay of physiological, environmental, and genetic factors. It is conditioned by the properly developed anatomy of the reproductive system, hormonal regulation balance, and the interplay between different cell populations that sustain an appropriate and functional environment in the testes. Unfortunately, the mechanisms sustaining male fertility are not flawless and their perturbation can lead to infertility.

Methyl Paraben Affects Porcine Oocyte Maturation Through Mitochondrial Dysfunction.

Biomolecules

November 2024

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Large Animal Models for Biomedicine, South China Institute of Large Animal Models for Biomedicine, School of Pharmacy and Food Engineering, Wuyi University, Jiangmen 529000, China.

Parabens are widely used in various industries, which are including chemical, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, and plastic processing industries. Among these, methyl paraben (MP) serves as an antimicrobial preservative in processed foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, and it is particularly detected in baby care products. Studies indicate that MP functions as an endocrine-disrupting compound with estrogenic properties, negatively affecting mitochondrial bioenergetics and antioxidant activity in testicular germ cells.

How Many Lymph Nodes are Enough in Paratesticular Rhabdomyosarcoma?

J Pediatr Surg

October 2024

Department of Urology, Division of Pediatric Urology, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Treatment strategies for paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma (PT RMS) are based on stage, which requires accurate lymph node (LN) evaluation. Previous methodology for determining quantity of LN for negative nodal status is based on LN positivity rates, without accounting for the relationship between LNs or amongst patients. This study aims to quantify the chance of missing involved LNs based on LN yield (LNY) using a previously established methodology in comparison to current recommendations.
