Safety data sheets (SDS) of chemicals are not only a key component of hazard/s communication in workplaces, but also furnish information on safe disposal of the waste chemicals. However, the question is do SDS furnish specific information regarding environmentally safe disposal of wastes? Therefore, this paper provides an appraisal on specific in-situ pre-treatment (where applicable) and environmentally acceptable disposal practices described in the SDS of selected toxic and genotoxic chemicals used in biomedical laboratories. A total of 21 SDS were reviewed, but only 19% of the SDS recommended high-temperature incineration of the waste chemicals after dissolution in a combustible solvent.

Earth: An Oxidative Planet with Limited Atom Resources and Rich Chemistry.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Departamento de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular B y Inmunología, Facultad de Química, Universidad de Murcia, E-30100, Murcia, Spain.

Humanity faces an unprecedented survival challenge: climate change, driven by the depletion of natural resources, excessive waste generation, and deforestation. Six out of nine planetary boundaries have been exceeded, signaling that Earth is far from a safe operating space for humanity. In this Viewpoint Article we explore three critical "atomic-molecular" challenges: Earth's limited atomic resources, its oxidative nature, and very rich chemistry.

Background: Propofol accounts for a substantial proportion of medication waste. Evidence-based waste reduction methods are scarce.

Methods: In a retrospective analysis of 331 procedures, the total propofol waste per surgery was compared between manual and syringe pump induction of anaesthesia during total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA), with a syringe pump used to maintain TIVA after induction.

This viewpoint paper emphasises the need to diversify food production methods to simultaneously combat hunger and reduce environmental problems. The recommendations of the UN Food System Summit 2021 relate primarily to (i) the conservation of natural ecosystems, (ii) the sustainable management of existing agricultural land while increasing productivity and (iii) the restoration of already degraded land. Europe in particular faces unique challenges, such as reducing pollution and promoting organic farming up to 25 percent of the agricultural land area while maintaining food production.
